Why This Role Matters

The RNE (Registration, Numbers and Enablement) group within Vonage's Foundation Engineering department works across four core product domains: Registration, Numbers, Number Intelligence, and Know Your Customer (KYC). As a Staff Engineer, you will be a technical anchor for the team, shaping the architecture of our cloud-native platform and influencing engineering culture across the group.

What You Will Do

• Provide technical leadership and vision for the design and development of highly concurrent, distributed backend systems;
• Drive and own significant architectural decisions, ensuring scalability, reliability and maintainability across the platform;
• Lead performance optimisation initiatives and resolve the most complex system-level challenges;
• Set the standard for testing practices, including Unit, Integration and Smoke tests, enabling fully automated promotion of code to production;
• Define, evolve and enforce coding standards and engineering best practices across the team;
• Act as a technical mentor and leader, supporting the growth of engineers at all levels;
• Collaborate closely with product and engineering leadership to align technical strategy with business goals;
• Provide out-of-hours support as part of an on-call rota.

What You Will Bring

Essential:

• Extensive programming experience in Go (Golang) or deep expertise in JVM technologies (Java/Spring Boot) with a strong commitment to adopting Go;
• Extensive, proven experience developing and maintaining enterprise-grade systems at scale;
• Deep expertise in highly concurrent, distributed architectures and systems;
• Extensive experience leading and owning architectural decisions at team and cross-team level;
• Prior experience as a Team Lead or Tech Lead, with a track record of mentoring and growing engineering talent;
• Experience with containerised applications and cloud-native infrastructure;
• Expert-level performance profiling and optimisation skills;
• Deep experience with relational and non-relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Redis);
• Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have:

• Deep hands-on experience with AWS (SQS, SNS, DynamoDB), Kafka, Kubernetes or Terraform;
• Experience driving Continuous Delivery practices in cloud environments;
• General understanding of the telecommunications industry.
