Senior News Editor, The Cut

New York, NY

The Cut is hiring a News Editor to oversee the site’s daily news coverage. You’ll work with the Cut’s executive and deputy editors to set the direction and tone of the blog, paying close attention to celebrity and tabloid news, politics, crime, and social media trends. You’ll manage a team of 3-4 staff writers, assigning and editing quick-turnaround news stories — from short blog posts to in-depth explainers — as well as freelancers working on longer-lead or next-day news coverage.

We're looking for an experienced editor who obsessively follows the news, has proven strategic understanding of SEO and traffic analytics, and is comfortable with multi-tasking and fast-paced online publishing. You should be able to confidently identify the big stories our readers care most about, and also have a sharp eye for sideways, unexpected — and fun! — ways to cover daily news. The ideal candidate has strong news judgment and a good sense of humor.

WHO WE ARE

The Cut, a New York Magazine site, is home to the conversations that matter most to women today — from politics and intersectional feminism to work, money, relationships, mental health and sex — and forward-thinking coverage of fashion and style.

The Cut is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Manage a team of 3-4 news writers
  • Assign, edit, and publish ~7 stories a day to staffers, from quick turnaround blogs to longer explainers
  • Work with freelancers on longer-lead assignments as needed
  • Closely follow celebrity news, culture trends, and politics, including actively monitoring social media
  • Take a leading role in conversations with Cut editors and writers about coverage ideas and angles
  • Monitor traffic and analytics to understand which stories resonate with the Cut audience and develop strategies accordingly

WHO YOU ARE

  • At least 3 years of editing experience, ideally in an online newsroom
  • Strong understanding of the Cut sensibility, tone, and audience
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and sense of fun around finding unique approaches and angles to aggregating news
  • Confidence generating and assigning ideas for blog posts
  • Comfort with multi-tasking, including editing and publishing fast-paced daily news stories
  • Experience writing engaging headlines and teasers
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
