The Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and operating automated solutions that streamline IT and business processes, reduce manual effort, and expand the organization's use of artificial intelligence and agentic workflows. This role bridges traditional scripting and infrastructure automation with modern AI-driven tooling, building systems that act, adapt, and scale with minimal human intervention.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in process automation, scripting, and workflow orchestration, and is actively exploring or applying AI and agentic technologies to solve real operational problems. This is a hands-on engineering role with high visibility and broad organizational impact. Key Responsibilities

Process & IT Automation

  • Identify, design, and implement automation solutions for repetitive IT and business processes across the organization.
  • Build and maintain automation scripts and workflows using Python and PowerShell, targeting infrastructure management, data movement, reporting, and operational tasks.
  • Develop and manage RPA (robotic process automation) workflows for business process automation where applicable.
  • Integrate automation solutions with enterprise platforms including Microsoft 365, Azure, and third-party SaaS applications via APIs and connectors.
  • Document all automation solutions including design rationale, dependencies, failure modes, and runbooks.

AI & Agentic Workflow Development

  • Lead the evaluation and adoption of AI-powered automation tools, agentic frameworks, and large language model integrations within the organization.
  • Design and deploy agentic workflows using frameworks such as LangChain, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel, or similar, enabling systems to reason, plan, and execute multi-step tasks autonomously.
  • Integrate AI capabilities into existing operational workflows to reduce manual decision-making and accelerate throughput.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to identify high-value AI automation opportunities and translate them into production-ready solutions.
  • Evaluate and recommend AI tooling, platforms, and vendors in alignment with organizational security and compliance requirements.
  • Stay current on emerging agentic AI patterns, model capabilities, and automation frameworks; bring new approaches to the team proactively.

Workflow Orchestration & Integration

  • Design and manage end-to-end workflow orchestration using tools such as Apache Airflow, Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate, or similar platforms.
  • Build robust API integrations and event-driven automation pipelines across cloud and on-premises systems.
  • Implement error handling, retry logic, alerting, and observability for all automated workflows to ensure reliability and visibility.
  • Maintain and extend automation libraries and reusable components for use across teams.

Infrastructure & DevOps Automation

  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration management using Terraform, Ansible, and CloudFormation.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) for automated testing and deployment of automation artifacts.
  • Develop self-service automation tooling that enables non-engineers to trigger and monitor complex workflows safely.
  • Support cloud operations automation across Azure Government and AWS GovCloud environments.

Monitoring, Optimization & Support

  • Monitor automation health, execution logs, and failure rates; implement proactive alerting and self-healing where possible.
  • Perform root cause analysis on automation failures and implement durable fixes.
  • Continuously evaluate and optimize existing automation for performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on automation best practices across the Data & Analytics Division.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Partner with IT, data, cybersecurity, and business operations teams to identify and prioritize automation opportunities.
  • Create and maintain thorough documentation for all automation solutions, including architecture diagrams, user guides, and compliance evidence.
  • Participate in sprint planning, architecture reviews, and cross-functional working groups.
  • Mentor team members on automation patterns, scripting best practices, and AI tooling adoption.

Technical Skills

Scripting & Programming (Required)

  • Expert level Python - scripting, automation, API integrations, AI/ML libraries (required)
  • Expert level PowerShell - infrastructure automation, Microsoft ecosystem scripting, task scheduling (required)
  • Bash / shell scripting - Linux and cross-platform automation tasks
  • REST API development and consumption - JSON, OAuth, webhook integrations

AI & Agentic Frameworks

  • Frameworks: LangChain, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel, CrewAI, or equivalent agentic orchestration frameworks
  • Platforms: Azure OpenAI Service, OpenAI API, Anthropic API, Hugging Face
  • Patterns: prompt engineering, RAG (retrieval-augmented generation), tool use / function calling, multi-agent coordination, memory and state management
  • Supporting: vector databases (Pinecone, Chroma, Azure AI Search), embedding models, LLM evaluation frameworks

Workflow Orchestration & RPA

  • Apache Airflow - DAG design, scheduling, sensor patterns, dependency management
  • Azure Logic Apps / Power Automate - low-code workflow automation for Microsoft environments
  • Microsoft Power Platform - Power Automate, Power Apps, connectors
  • UiPath, Automation Anywhere, or Power Automate Desktop - RPA tooling
  • Event-driven architecture - Azure Event Grid, Azure Service Bus, webhooks

Infrastructure as Code & DevOps

  • Required: Terraform, AWS CloudFormation
  • Preferred: Ansible - configuration management and environment automation
  • CI/CD: Azure DevOps Pipelines, GitHub Actions
  • Containers: Docker, Kubernetes (AKS) basics
  • Version control: Git - branching models, access management, code review workflows

Cloud Platforms

  • Azure Government / Microsoft 365: Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Azure Automation, Graph API, GCC High
  • AWS GovCloud: Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, S3, Systems Manager
  • Identity and access integrations: Entra ID (Azure AD), SCIM, OAuth 2.0, SAML

Monitoring & Observability

  • Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights
  • Structured logging, alerting pipelines, and dashboard development
  • Self-healing automation patterns and failure-mode design

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field highly desired; or equivalent hands-on experience combined with certifications. 
  • 12+ years of experience in automation engineering, DevOps, systems engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated track record of building and operating production-grade automation solutions at enterprise scale.
  • Hands-on experience designing or deploying AI-powered or agentic workflows in a professional setting.
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments preferred.
  • US Person required, as defined under ITAR/EAR.

Soft Skills

  • Intellectually curious and self-directed - actively tracks and experiments with emerging AI and automation tooling.
  • Strong problem-solver who can move from ambiguous business need to working automation solution.
  • Clear communicator - able to explain automation capabilities and limitations to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits; treats automation artifacts as production software.

  • Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate (PL-400)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate (AI-200)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate
  • AWS Certified Developer - Associate
  • CompTIA Security+ (preferred for environments with compliance requirements)

Working Conditions

  • Fully remote position; no geographical preference.
  • Occasional after-hours availability for deployment windows and incident response.
  • Active participation in sprint-based delivery against a defined automation roadmap.
  • Must comply with all applicable data handling and export control policies.

The good faith base salary range for this role is $160,000–$180,000 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.
