The Role

The Chemical Engineering Technician is responsible for assisting with the stand-up and operation of pilot facilities supporting chemical and black powder research, collaborating with cross-functional teams — including operations, quality control, and research & development — to bring these systems and facilities online.

The position reports to the Lead Chemical Technician and is part of the Engineering Chemicals Team based in Penrose, CO. This is a full-time, onsite role in Penrose, CO, working a 9/80 schedule.

In this role, the essential functions are:

  • Install, repair, and maintain piping systems, including threading and assembling NPT fittings, plastic piping (PEX, PVC, CPVC), sanitary pipe fittings, and other plumbing methods.
  • Support day-to-day pilot plant operations by assisting the engineering team with running equipment and helping resolve issues as they arise.
  • Maintain and repair mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, and general hardware components.
  • Assemble and install structural systems using materials such as Unistrut, t-slot framing, concrete mounting, and basic carpentry/fabrication techniques.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues to ensure smooth, efficient operations and minimize equipment downtime.
  • Maintain and organize the pilot plant, including spare parts inventory, to ensure critical components are available for operations and repairs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams — including operations, quality control, and research & development — to stand up new pilot systems and facilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 4+ years of experience in industrial manufacturing, mechanical technician work, or other relevant experience OR Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to diagnose mechanical issues and implement effective solutions quickly
  • Hand and shop tool knowledge (power tools, saws, grinders, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Proactive and self-directed with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of basic design principles (sizing of hardware and plumbing, material selection, material compatibility, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems with the ability to troubleshoot issues using a digital multimeter
  • Fabrication experience, including mounting and modifying existing equipment in place

Travel, Physical and/or Government Mandated Requirements:

  • Travel up to 10%, primarily local travel between site facilities
  • Frequent movement through a manufacturing environment; regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the work location
  • Ability to lift, move, or carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to sit or stand at a desk and use a computer and keyboard for portions of the workday

The good faith hourly range for this role is $27.00 - $32.00 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base pay only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.
