Assistant Controller

VSC Fire & Security is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Controller.

What you need:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
- Active CPA license.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience including public accounting, preferably in audit.
- Experience with construction and inventory accounting is preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or Oracle).
- Strong Excel skills, including advanced functions such as pivot tables, macros, and data analysis tools.
- Comprehensive understanding of US GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley.
- Experience with multi-entity, multi-state operations and intercompany accounting.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
What you will do:
- Own significant portions of the monthly close process, including preparation, review, and variance analysis.
- Prepare, review, and continuously improve balance sheet reconciliations during the month end close.
- Identify and resolve recurring close issues, timing problems, and process gaps.
- Review journal entries and supporting documentation and initiate corrections or improvements as needed.
- Support revenue recognition across service and construction work, including percentage-of-completion and job-level margin analysis.
- Assist with WIP construction schedules, backlog reporting, and gross margin analysis by job, division, and service line.
- Responsible for inventory accounting and controls, including valuation, reconciliations, fabrication and physical counts.
- Provide day-to-day support and oversight for accounting staff.
- Review work product for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness.
- Help prioritize workloads during month-end close, audits, and peak periods.
- Step in as needed to unblock progress, solve problems, and/or handle escalations.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of accounting operations.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior accounting team members.
- Support ERP system enhancements and upgrades, including automation of complex accounting processes.
- Support substantive and 404 audits, including PBC preparation and audit issue resolution.
- Assist with maintaining strong internal controls and consistent accounting policies.
- Help ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies across entities and locations.
- Initial review of most SOX key controls.
