Protective Service Officer (PSO) – DOJ Facilities
Overview:
Protective Service Officers (PSOs) provide armed security and access control at U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) facilities in the Washington, DC metro area. PSOs deter threats, protect personnel and property, and respond to incidents and emergencies in accordance with DOJ policies and procedures. All PSOs are deputized under the U.S. Marshals Service Special Deputation Program for duties performed on DOJ premises.
Key Responsibilities:
- Control access to DOJ facilities by screening visitors, personnel, and vehicles using metal detectors, x-ray machines, and visual inspection protocols.
- Conduct patrols and maintain a visible security presence to deter unauthorized activity or criminal acts.
- Respond immediately to alarms, emergencies, and suspicious behavior, detaining individuals if necessary until law enforcement arrives.
- Monitor building activity and maintain accurate logbooks, reports, and incident documentation.
- Enforce DOJ rules, protect federal employees and property, and assist in evacuation or lockdown procedures during emergencies.
- Administer first aid, AED, CPR, and NARCAN when appropriate.
- Follow strict weapons handling protocols, post orders, and use of force guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizen; 21 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 18 months of prior law enforcement or armed security experience.
- Graduate of a U.S. civilian or military law enforcement academy or a federal/state corrections academy with firearms certification.
- Eligible for deputation under the U.S. Marshals Service Special Deputation Program.
- Must pass a DOJ physical exam and agility test annually.
- Must pass and maintain DOJ firearms qualification every six months.
- Current certification in First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, and NARCAN from ARC or AHA.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking); able to write detailed incident reports.
- Must meet DOJ standards for physical fitness, vision, hearing, and medical conditions as outlined in the SOW.
- Must maintain a professional appearance and wear full uniform, including Level IIIA ballistic vest and all required duty gear, at all times while on duty.
Work Conditions:
- Requires extended standing, walking, and exposure to outdoor weather.
- Must be able to respond physically to incidents, detain individuals, and work under high-stress conditions.
- Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
