Position Overview: We are seeking an inspiring and student-centered Elementary Assistant Principal of Student Affairs & Culture to lead initiatives that foster a supportive, engaging, and inclusive school environment. This role champions student success by overseeing behavioral interventions, social-emotional learning, and school-wide culture programs. The ideal candidate will implement the Whole Child Model and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), collaborate with staff to enhance student achievement, and support extracurricular activities that empower student leadership. Additionally, this leader will supervise student support teams, manage non-instructional periods, and partner with families to build a thriving school community. You will drive Yu Ying’s mission, vision and team’s success by:
Leading an environment that successfully develops the full range of students; learning capacities - academic, creative, socio-emotional, behavioral, and physical by:
- Using data to evaluate the impact of student programs, behavioral interventions, and extracurricular activities, making continuous improvements to meet school-wide goals.
- Collaborates with staff to achieve social-emotional/behavioral targets
- Develops, implements and monitors data outcomes for planning implementation to improve student achievement, with a focus on students furthest from resources.
- Participating and occasionally lead staffing activities to select, induct, support, evaluate, and retain quality full-time, part-time, and/or hourly instructional personnel
- Maintaining professional competence through participation in required professional development activities and events provided by Yu Ying and/or self-directed professional growth activities.
- Taking on a mentor, co-teaching, and/or instructional role when necessary.
- Lending support to lead teachers in their classroom regularly, as needed
- Being familiar with and advise on all school handbooks, behavior policies and practices
- Working with staff to create an effective learning environment that is aesthetic, functional, and reflects the Whole Child Model.
- Demonstrating an understanding of the change process
Leading and implementing the whole child model and positive behavioral incentives and supports (PBIS) by:
- Facilitating learning of staff necessary for implementation of the Whole Child Model
- Designing and lead the implementation of a school-wide PBIS framework, fostering a positive, inclusive culture and reducing behavioral incidents
- Ensuring fidelity of implementation of the Whole Child Model in all areas in the school
- Partnering with the instructional leadership team and the Director of Intervention to align interventions, support systems, and professional learning opportunities with the school's academic and cultural goals.
- Planning for and predictably respond to student behavior that doesn’t meet school culture expectations; follow up with teachers to coach and empower them to plan and respond more effectively next time
Coordinating student affairs, clubs, and activities by:
- Overseeing and supporting advisors of student clubs and extracurricular activities, ensuring alignment with school culture and mission, and fostering meaningful engagement opportunities for students.
- Serving as the advisor to the student council, guiding student leaders in planning initiatives, fostering leadership skills, and promoting a positive school culture.
- Developing, implementing, and supervising the school’s tutoring program to ensure high-quality academic support that meets student needs and improves outcomes.
- Developing opportunities for students to take active roles in school decision-making, encouraging student voice and leadership across all grade levels.
- Creating, developing, and sustaining relationships that result in active student engagement in the learning process
Supervising Student Support Staff and Non-Instructional support by:
- Overseeing the daily work and schedules of student liaisons and other stipended or part-time staff focused on school culture or student affairs, ensuring they receive high-quality professional learning opportunities and the tools needed to support student success.
- Overseeing non-instructional periods during the day including lunch & recess
- Overseeing substitute Teacher scheduling and performance
Collaborating across teams by:
- Serving as the Principal’s representative on various teams if Principal is unable to attend e.g School Mental Health and Attendance Team, Senior Leadership Team Meetings
- Regularly collaborating with school leadership, staff and families to build an inclusive school environment for special populations (i.e. students with IEPs, students with 504s, ELL students, new students, students with HCYP status, etc.)
- Proactively engaging families and communities in support of child’s learning and school learning goals
- Occasionally leading working groups focused around student affairs and/or school culture.
- Actively participating in school culture committees
- Leading an affirming and joyful culture for students
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Education-related fields from an accredited institution.
- 5 years or more experience in teaching elementary grades, preferably with some of those years in IB PYP World schools.
- A deep belief in Washington Yu Ying PCS’ vision and mission.
- Appreciation, experience, and understanding of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Demonstrated experience in schoolwide culture change
- Understanding of public school organization, administration, and the support activities required.
- Positive attitude and maturity sufficient for a demanding leadership role and longer school days as needed.
- Maintains calm and poise in unpredictable, potentially stressful, situations with students
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience and knowledge in the IB PYP.
- Familiarity with inquiry-based elementary education curriculum and instructional practices and trends.
