Data Scientist

Remote - US

Waymark is a team of healthcare providers, technologists, and builders whose mission is to bring the best healthcare to people with Medicaid benefits. Guided by the communities we serve, we bring support and technology-enabled care to help primary care providers keep Medicaid patients healthy. We are building the tools and designing an approach to enable care to reach the patients who can benefit most.

Our core values embody the essence of what makes Waymark a unique team today, and what we look for, nurture, and sustain as a team. We are bold builders, believing that the greatest challenges in care delivery can be solved when we harness the power of community and technology. We are humble learners, seeking feedback and perspectives different from our own, and welcome challenges to our conclusions. We experiment to improve, actively seeking data to inform decisions and to assess our own performance. We act with focused urgency, our commitment to our mission drives us to tirelessly pursue results.

About this role

Our 2025 data science roadmap focuses on three core projects: deploying AI in clinical workflows to maintain the quality of care for patients, expanding LLM automation to reduce administrative work for our care team members, and advancing machine learning prediction models to help target the right patients with the right interventions. We’ll implement real-time decision-support tools to give our patient-facing teams actionable insights into patient needs and optimal interventions. LLM automation will extend to tasks like patient intake, scheduling, follow-up, documentation, and triage, reducing manual work for healthcare staff. Additionally, we’ll enhance existing machine learning models through complex feature development and build new models for patient-targeting and intervention-deployment tasks. Achieving these goals requires prototyping, experimentation, peer-reviewed publication, and close collaboration with product, care quality, and engineering teams to align on business and clinical needs and scale our tools effectively within our broader application. A core part of this role involves a strong understanding of claims data and healthcare data science modeling methods, including predictive modeling, risk stratification, and patient segmentation, to inform our models and solutions.

As a startup, we value a proactive, flexible, go-getter approach in our team members. You must have a demonstrated ability to run with your projects with minimal guidance, working closely with stakeholders across disciplines to craft a solution. This role requires strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and make informed trade-offs between building an MVP and longer-term goals. We are looking for someone who can create clear project plans, size work accurately, and understand how to balance immediate needs with future scalability. Additionally, we have a highly collaborative team, so you should be team-oriented, eager to work with other data scientists, and willing to support various tasks across the broader technology development team, including engineering, product, and analytics. These soft skills are essential to thrive in our fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Our interview process includes a real-time coding and data science exam, as well as a take home exam. To be considered for the role, you must receive >90% raw score on an exam normed to expert level proficiency (i.e., corresponding to 10 years or more of experience in Data Science).

Sixteen (16) weeks of parental leave for birthing parents will also be available for use after successful completion of 6 months of employment, eight (8) weeks of bonding leave for non-birthing parents.  Employees are able to enroll in our 401(k) plan and commuter benefits plan.

COVID Vaccination: Waymark has adopted a policy on mandatory full vaccination to safeguard our employees, our partners, and the patients we serve from the hazard of COVID-19.  As a healthcare company, we believe it is important for our employees and actions to reflect the best available science and the interests of public health.  You will be asked to attest to your COVID vaccination status before an offer of employment is made.

Don’t check off every box in the requirements listed above? Please apply anyway! Studies have shown that marginalized communities - such as women, LGBTQ+ and people of color - are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. Waymark is dedicated to building an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible workplace that fosters a sense of belonging – so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to still consider submitting an application. You may be just the right candidate for this role or another one of our openings!

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
