Position Overview
The Technical Consultant provides technical oversight for all West Cancer Center clinical laboratories to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and professional standards. This role is responsible for managing quality assurance and quality control programs, validating new tests and equipment, and providing training and guidance to laboratory staff. The Technical Consultant ensures laboratory performance meets established criteria while supporting ongoing operational excellence and regulatory readiness.
Key Responsibilities

Select appropriate test methodologies for the clinical test menu.

Verify testing procedures and establish laboratory performance criteria for accuracy and precision.

Enroll laboratories in approved proficiency testing programs commensurate with services offered.

Establish and oversee quality control programs, ensuring analytic performance standards are maintained.

Resolve technical problems and ensure corrective actions are taken before reporting patient results.

Identify training needs and ensure personnel receive regular training and competency evaluations.

Evaluate and document testing personnel performance at required intervals and when test methodologies or instrumentation change.

Oversee accreditation criteria, inspections, QC, and QA processes across multiple laboratory sites.

Participate in the development and validation of new testing procedures and techniques.

Recommend and implement changes in methods and processes to improve laboratory workflows.

Assist with LIS-related projects including interface management, data extraction, upgrades, and conversions.

Support daily testing activities as needed in coordination with the Laboratory Supervisor.
Qualifications
Education & Experience

Required:
-
Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Science.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in nonwaived testing in a designated specialty or subspecialty.

Current Tennessee licensure as a Medical Technologist/MLT (or Special Analyst) if employed in TN, practicing in the area of specific licensure.

Preferred:
-
Degree in Medical Technology.

10+ years’ experience in a nonwaived WCC laboratory.

Certification as MT/MLT through ASCP if working outside Tennessee.

Skills & Abilities

In-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, practices, and regulatory standards.

Strong understanding of laboratory safety and infection control protocols.

Ability to interpret technical materials and reports accurately.

Excellent communication skills for working with staff, management, physicians, and patients.

Proven ability to lead, train, and motivate individuals and teams.

Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a wide range of situations.

Good understanding of laboratory workflows, information systems, and analytical problem-solving.

Physical ability to perform job requirements, including light lifting and extended periods of standing or computer work.
