Position Overview
The Medical Assistant – Prescription Refills & Hospital Admits provides clinical support under the direction of a provider, ensuring efficient prescription management, timely hospital admission assistance, and high-quality patient care. This role maintains a clean and safe clinic environment, supports daily clinical operations, and provides mentoring to Level I Medical Assistants within the same clinic. The ideal candidate demonstrates professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced oncology setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary clinic contact for all prescription refill requests and act as backup for hospital admissions.
- Monitor group inboxes and address patient needs that do not require nursing judgment (e.g., rescheduling, paperwork).
- Proactively support physicians and clinical staff by fulfilling patient care responsibilities as needed.
- Set up exam rooms, instruments, and equipment to ensure readiness for patient visits.
- Perform clinical medical assisting duties, including accurate documentation within the EMR system.
- Provide mentoring and support to Level I Medical Assistants within the clinic.
- Utilize motivational interviewing and teach-back methods during patient interactions.
- Respond appropriately and promptly to emergency situations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and patient-focused clinical environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a medical facility as a Medical Assistant or in a similar healthcare setting.
- Preferred:
- Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program.
- Two (2) years of experience working in a healthcare facility.
Credential/Licensure
- Required:
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through:
- AAMA, NHA, NCCT, NAHP, or
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through the American Registry of Medical Assistants
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
Skills & Abilities
- Required:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with patients, families, and physicians.
- Demonstrated proficiency in clinical competencies required for Level 2 Medical Assistants.
- Ability to begin patient visits with professional, compassionate engagement.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in EMR usage, documentation, and reviewing clinical reports using evidence-based guidelines.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach-back techniques.
- Ability to act quickly during emergencies.
