MBA Summer Investment Analyst
THE FIRM
Founded in 2006 by Alexander Sacerdote, Whale Rock Capital Management is a Boston-based investment firm managing over $7 billion in assets, focused on public and private Technology, Media and Telecom (TMT) investments. We strive to provide superior returns by harnessing the innovation and disruption inherent in the TMT space, investing in companies of all capitalization ranges and most subsectors including internet, software, hardware, services and payments. The team uses a growth-oriented, S-Curve based investment approach to identify the most attractive public long and short opportunities and select private investments. Our approach is underpinned by intensive and rigorous fundamental research, conducting over 2,500 meetings with public and private TMT companies each year. In addition to financial modeling and analysis, the team meets venture capitalists, customers, competitors and suppliers to gain an in-depth understanding of market dynamics.
THE ROLE
During the internship, Summer Analysts will sit alongside and work closely with our analysts and partners. Summer Analysts will gain valuable exposure to our research approach and will contribute to the investment process by conducting research on select sectors and equities, culminating in a presentation on key findings and investment recommendations.
This opportunity is ideal for first-year MBA students who are interested in pursuing a career in public equity investing, particularly in technology. Our Summer Analyst program is one of our top pipelines for investment talent; there is potential for this to turn into a full-time position post-graduation.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct deep dives on industry sub-sectors and individual stocks
- Engage in primary research including management meetings, customer interviews and surveys, expert calls, industry conferences
- Conduct competitive analysis, market sizing and financial statement analysis/modeling
- Prepare findings and recommendations in research report; present to investment team/founder
The internship will be based at our headquarters in Boston.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior financial analytical experience in investment banking, consulting or at an investment firm is preferred, but not required
- Knowledge and/or experience in the technology sector is also preferred
- Creative thinkers with a passion for learning, collaborative mindset and keen interest in technology
- A high degree of intellectual curiosity
- Low-ego, team-oriented style, unimpeachable integrity, and values that align with ours
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
