SENIOR VISUAL DESIGNER
Summary
The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Visual Designer who is passionate about the power of brand, design, and technology to change the world. You will be our brand Design ambassador, responsible for building an iconic memorable brand that pushes for real impact within the Wikimedia movement and for the world.
You’ll report to the Creative Director and oversee and lead projects from start to finish, confident with overseeing a project’s timelines and stakeholder management. You will also work with the Senior Brand Manager to further develop and maintain the Wikimedia, Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia visual identity systems. You push for an exceptional level of design and brand consistency to deliver high-quality work in time.
A master of design and the brand building, who enjoys designing across various touchpoints, from small ad-hoc projects and design requests, identity toolkits to large-scale global products and campaigns. In addition to hands-on design, you are comfortable overseeing and managing design vendors on a range of projects.
You do everything with the goal of expressing the essence of Wikipedia/Wikimedia, with a vision that speaks to people who need free knowledge around the world.
You are responsible for:
- Exceptional design standard and brand stewardship
- Design with the highest craft standards, and attention to detail, across all touchpoints, from social designs, toolkits, and global campaigns
- Oversee creative projects from start to finish, managing timelines and stakeholders
- Use design thinking to solve complex problems posed by the Foundation teams, partners and volunteers
- Push for better creative, design and branding, inspiring the Foundation and external audiences at large
- A brand ambassador, who safeguards and develops our brand guidelines
- Work with the brand team to maintain a library of brand assets and materials and guidelines for Foundation staff, volunteers and partners around the world to use
- Creating a collaborative environment
- Working collaboratively with the Creative Director, creative team members, and fellow stakeholders in the Foundation, from Product Design colleagues to Fundraising design leads, to solve problems and shape work as one team
- Managing and art directing external design partners, ensuring work delivered is on brief, on quality and on time
- Coach, educate and inspire colleagues, volunteers, partners, and collaborators on the correct usage of brand materials

- Solve problems through collaboration, showcase positive attitude and communicate honestly, clearly and with empathy
- Be a steward of the Wikimedia mission, to build the sum of all knowledge, and embrace human diversity
You have these skills:
- 6+ year of experience
- Deep understanding on the fundamentals of design
- Attention to detail and craft and ensuring output if at highest standard
- Ability to manage a project's timelines, overseeing projects from start to finish
- Confident and experienced in managing external design partners
- Collaborative individual, with the ability to flourish in a highly transparent (we really mean it) and collaborative environment and work on a team with diverse demographic and cultural characteristics
- Intellectual curiosity and flexibility that makes you enjoy tackling difficult and ambiguous problems in creative ways.
- Sense of creative experimentation and innovation: you will be empowered to make and re-make things based on your expertise and experience
These skills are a bonus:
- Experience in working globally and in a range of markets. You've partnered with diverse vendors and engaged international audiences
- Experience working with brands that have community stakeholders, advising global volunteer community

The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization with staff members including contractors based 40+ countries*. Salaries at the Wikimedia Foundation are set in a way that is competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values and culture. The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$90,223 to US$139,037 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay. For applicants located outside of the US, the pay range will be adjusted to the country of hire. We neither ask for nor take into consideration the salary history of applicants. The compensation for a successful applicant will be based on their skills, experience and location.
