Senior Scientist, Fermentation 

Job Description 

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to play a pivotal role in planning, executing, analyzing, and communicating fermentation experiments using our proprietary consortia of methane-eating microbes (MEMs). 
This is a hands-on laboratory position requiring expertise in microbial physiology, strong data analysis skills, and the ability to clearly communicate experimental results to internal teams and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will bring a collaborative, proactive mindset, exceptional attention to detail, and a passion for mentoring junior scientists. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Design and execute fermentation experiments with a full “end-to-end” approach — from hypothesis development and statistical experimental design to results analysis and communication. 
  • Proactively identify needs, optimize workflows, and contribute to continuous process improvement. 
  • Collaborate closely across multidisciplinary teams to align goals and share insights. 
  • Communicate experimental planning, progress, and outcomes clearly and efficiently. 
  • Adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities. 

 

Qualifications 

  • MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or a related biological sciences discipline. 
  • 5+ years of industrial fermentation experience; gas fermentation experience highly desirable. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in microbial physiology; knowledge of C1 metabolism and/or nitrate metabolism highly desirable. 
  • Proven experience leading teams and mentoring junior scientists. 
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to manage and interpret large, complex datasets. 
  • Proficiency in scientific software and statistical tools; working knowledge of R or Python is a plus. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required for laboratory operations. 
  • Commitment to safety and fostering a culture of safe laboratory practices.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $160 - 185k, plus equity and benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and location.
