Position Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Tax Specialist to join our finance team. This role is responsible for managing and supporting all aspects of tax compliance, planning, and reporting across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of tax regulations, depreciation strategies, and audit processes, and will serve as a key liaison with external tax accountants and tax authorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance & Follow-up: Ensure timely and accurate filing of all tax returns; monitor compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
- State, Local & Property Taxes: Prepare and review filings; manage assessments and appeals; maintain accurate records.
- Depreciation & Cost Segregation: Analyze fixed assets for proper classification; support cost segregation studies to optimize tax benefits.
- Estimated Tax Review: Calculate and monitor estimated tax payments; adjust forecasts based on financial performance.
- Tax Planning: Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement tax-efficient strategies aligned with business goals.
- Compilation & Delivery of Tax Documents: Organize and transmit required documentation to external accountants for return preparation.
- Tax Accrual Review for Audit: Review and validate tax accruals; support internal and external audit processes.
- IRS & State Audit Notice Review: Respond to notices; coordinate with legal and accounting teams to resolve issues.
- Payroll Tax Issues – State & Federal: Address payroll tax discrepancies; ensure compliance with employment tax regulations.
- Year-End Tax Review: Conduct comprehensive review of tax positions and filings; prepare for year-end reporting.
- Business Tax Strategies: Research and recommend tax-saving opportunities; stay current on legislative changes.
- Project Management of Return Prep Processes: Oversee timelines and deliverables for tax return preparation; ensure coordination across teams.
- Tax Research: Perform in-depth research on complex tax issues; document findings and provide actionable guidance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MST preferred
- 3–5 years of experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or a similar role
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations
- Experience with tax software and ERP systems (e.g., OneSource, Vertex, SAP, Oracle)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and tax research tools (e.g., CCH, RIA, BNA)
Preferred Skills
- Experience with cost segregation studies and fixed asset accounting
- Familiarity with tax provision and accrual processes under ASC 740
- Prior involvement in IRS or state audits
- Strong project management capabilities
Physical Requirements:
- Office environment with normal business hours necessary to satisfactorily perform job functions.
- Stationary Position – Must be able to remain in a stationary position up to 50% of the time.
- Move or Traverse – This position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, meeting rooms, office machinery, etc. May occasionally ascends/descends the stairs to get to other floors, cafeteria and parking area.
- Dexterity – constantly operates a computer and other office machinery such as a copy machine/printer.
- Move, Transport, Position, Put, Install, Remove - Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 10 pounds for various presentation and event needs.
- Communicate, Detect, Converse with, Discern, Convey, Express oneself, Exchange information - The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Detect, Determine, Perceive, Identify, Recognize, Judge, Observe, Inspect, Estimate, Assess - The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
