Junior Backend Engineer

About Wolt

At Wolt, we create technology that brings joy, simplicity and earnings to the neighborhoods of the world. In 2014 we started with delivery of restaurant food. Now we’re building the delivery of (almost) everything and you’ll find us in over 500 cities in 30 countries around the world. In 2022 we joined forces with DoorDash and together we keep on dreaming big and expanding across the globe.

Working at Wolt isn’t always easy, but it’s definitely exciting. Here you’ll learn more, build more, and ship more than in most other companies. You’ll be challenged a lot, but also have a lot of fun on the way. So, if you’re a self-starter with drive and entrepreneurial spirit, this could be the ride of your life.

Who We Are

Global Marts builds the technology behind DoorDash's own grocery and retail operations across DashMart, Wolt Market, and Deliveroo Hop. Our systems decide what products our stores stock, how much inventory to purchase, which vendors to source from, how warehouses execute orders, and what prices customers see.

We build everything from forecasting and replenishment systems to vendor management, warehouse execution, labor scheduling, space optimization, and pricing. Our in-house forecasting platform has replaced third-party solutions and now powers production globally. This isn't a traditional CRUD backend environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on real operational problems and learn how backend systems support a global retail organization.

What You'll Do

As a Backend Engineer, you'll work primarily with Go or Kotlin alongside experienced engineers to build and improve production systems. You'll:

  • Build and improve backend services that support inventory, purchasing, warehouse operations, pricing, and fulfillment.
  • Write reliable, maintainable, and well-tested code following established engineering practices.
  • Work with experienced engineers to understand technical problems and contribute to their solutions.
  • Learn how we design, deploy, monitor, and operate backend services in production.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, data scientists, and operations teams.
  • Take increasing ownership of features and services as you grow in the role.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and the team's operational responsibilities.
  • Use modern AI-assisted development tools to accelerate learning and development, while applying sound engineering judgment to validate and understand the solutions you build.

How We Work

  • Learning & Ownership: You'll be supported by experienced engineers while gradually taking more ownership of the systems you work on.
  • Collaboration: We solve problems together and value asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning from each other.
  • Scalability & Simplicity: We value pragmatic solutions and focus on building reliable systems without unnecessary complexity.

Our Tech Stack

Our primary backend languages are Go and Kotlin. We also use Kafka, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Snowflake, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, gRPC, GitHub Actions, and modern cloud infrastructure.

You don't need experience with all of these technologies. We're looking for strong engineering fundamentals and an eagerness to learn.

Our Humble Expectations

We're looking for engineers who have:

  • A good foundation in software engineering and backend development.
  • Experience with Go, Kotlin, or another modern programming language through professional work, internships, studies, or personal projects.
  • An understanding of fundamental concepts such as APIs, databases, testing, and writing maintainable code.
  • An interest in learning how production systems are built, deployed, monitored, and operated.
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and work on problems that may initially be unfamiliar.
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Are comfortable using AI-assisted development tools as part of your everyday engineering workflow to learn, explore, debug, and ship effectively, while being able to understand, validate, and take ownership of the code you produce.

Nice to Have

Experience or exposure to any of the following is a plus, but not required:

  • Databases, cloud infrastructure, or distributed systems.
  • Kafka, Snowflake, or other data and streaming technologies.
  • Forecasting, optimization, scheduling, or data-heavy applications.
  • Grocery, retail, logistics, supply chain, or warehouse technology.

Why Join Us?

You'll have the opportunity to develop your backend engineering skills while working on technology that powers DoorDash's global grocery and retail business.

You'll learn from experienced engineers and contribute to systems that influence inventory, fulfillment, pricing, and supply chain decisions across multiple markets.

📍 This role is based in one of our tech hubs in Helsinki. We work in distributed teams, but may not be able to support fully remote work or relocation.
