Position Overview:

Woolpert is seeking an experienced Project Surveyor to support survey and geospatial projects throughout the United States. This position provides technical leadership and project coordination for infrastructure, transportation, aviation, utility, and other geospatial projects. The Project Surveyor will plan, coordinate, review, and deliver survey work in accordance with project scope, schedule, budget, quality standards, and professional requirements. This role works closely with project managers, field crews, survey technicians, CADD professionals, engineers, geospatial specialists, subconsultants, and clients to produce accurate, fit-for-purpose deliverables. The successful candidate will bring strong technical surveying knowledge along with project leadership, communication, quality management, and familiarity with emerging geospatial technologies. This role will also mentor staff, support proposals and business development, and help strengthen client relationships. This position may be located within the United States and will support projects and teams across multiple geographic regions.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead survey tasks and project phases from planning and scoping through final delivery.
  • Review project scopes, RFPs, plans, specifications, records, and client requirements to establish survey limits, technical approaches, staffing, schedules, and budgets.
  • Develop survey methodologies based on project requirements, site conditions, accuracy standards, schedule, and available technology.
  • Plan and coordinate horizontal and vertical control, GNSS/GPS observations, total station surveys, leveling, topographic, construction, boundary, right-of-way, and supplemental design surveys.
  • Coordinate boundary and property research, including deeds, plats, easements, field evidence, and right-of-way determinations.
  • Prepare and review survey deliverables including plats, legal descriptions, exhibits, reports, control documentation, basemapping, surface models, and design-ready datasets.
  • Integrate conventional survey data with technologies such as UAS, terrestrial lidar, aerial imagery and photogrammetry, mobile mapping, GNSS, GIS, and other geospatial datasets.
  • Oversee survey data processing, adjustments, feature coding, terrain development, planimetric mapping, and CADD production.
  • Coordinate survey and subsurface utility information, including utility records, field evidence, test holes, and Quality Level A and B data when included in project scope.
  • Apply applicable federal, state, local, client, CADD/GIS, and professional surveying standards.
  • Develop and implement project-specific QA/QC procedures and review field observations, calculations, control networks, mapping, boundary and right-of-way determinations, surfaces, and final deliverables.
  • Monitor project scope, schedule, staffing, and budget; identify risks or variances and coordinate corrective actions with project managers.
  • Coordinate field activities, staffing, equipment, property access, traffic control, permitting, restricted-access requirements, and project-specific safety expectations.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to survey crews, technicians, CADD personnel, and geospatial staff.
  • Collaborate across engineering, transportation, aviation, utilities, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and other disciplines to support multidisciplinary projects.
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, subconsultants, property owners, utility representatives, government agencies, and internal teams to resolve project needs and recommend practical solutions.
  • Support proposals, scopes of work, staffing plans, schedules, fee estimates, presentations, interviews, and other business development activities.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and promote a culture of safety, quality, collaboration, accountability, innovation, and client service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Geography, GIS, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant professional experience will be considered.
  • Extensive experience with Aviation surveys (18B) and a strong background in Geodesy strongly preferred. LSIT or Surveyor Intern certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating survey work for infrastructure, transportation, aviation, utility, land development, construction, or similar projects.
  • Strong knowledge of professional land surveying practices, including boundary and topographic surveying, horizontal and vertical control, right-of-way, GNSS/GPS, total station surveying, differential leveling, aviation surveys, and construction survey support.
  • Experience establishing, processing, adjusting, and documenting survey control networks.
  • Familiarity with modern geospatial technologies, including UAS, terrestrial lidar, mobile mapping, aerial photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, and high-accuracy GNSS.
  • Experience interpreting engineering plans, survey scopes, deeds, plats, easements, right-of-way plans, utility records, construction documents, and technical specifications.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing survey calculations, plats, legal descriptions, exhibits, control reports, basemaps, terrain models, and related deliverables.
  • Strong understanding of survey QA/QC principles and applicable surveying, mapping, CADD, and GIS standards.
  • Ability to manage scopes, schedules, budgets, staffing plans, project changes, and multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Strong technical judgment, organization, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Commitment to professional ethics, quality, safety, client service, and applicable surveying laws and standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and commonly used project collaboration tools.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including occasional overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a Project Surveyor, Survey Task Lead, Technical Lead, or Survey QA/QC Reviewer on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center and related Trimble surveying technologies.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, or comparable CADD platforms.
  • Experience with GIS, mobile mapping, terrestrial lidar, UAS, aerial photogrammetry, or other remote sensing workflows.
  • Experience with high-order horizontal or vertical control surveys.
  • Experience leading survey work for state DOTs, airports, municipalities, federal agencies, utilities, or other public-sector clients.
  • Experience working on active transportation or aviation facilities with significant access, safety, traffic control, security, or operational requirements.
  • Experience supporting proposals, fee development, technical approaches, interviews, qualifications packages, or other business development activities.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing junior survey staff.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform prolonged computer and office work and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally visit active survey, roadway, aviation, infrastructure, utility, and construction sites.
  • Ability to safely work around active construction or transportation environments using required personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and occasionally reach, bend, climb, balance, and lift or move equipment associated with project activities.
  • Ability to safely and effectively perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Pay Range

$57,800 - $86,600 USD
