Position Overview

Woolpert is hiring a Practice Leader to join our dynamic Transportation Geospatial Team in our growing Transportation Market. This position reports to the Transportation Market Director and is responsible for spearheading strategic growth, and operational excellence. Champions innovation through adoption of emerging technologies including AI-enabled workflows, reality capture, mobile mapping, automation, and digital delivery solutions. This role combines the firmwide Practice Leader leadership framework with geospatial-specific responsibilities, ensuring alignment with market strategies and objectives. The Practice Leader serves as the primary business leader for the practice, accountable for financial performance, client satisfaction, and talent development.

What You Will Do:

  • Strategic Leadership: Align practice objectives with Woolpert’s VS3 (Vision, Strategy, Structure & Staffing) plans and develop annual goals that promote industry leadership. Define and execute the practice’s strategic plan, ensuring integration with corporate initiatives and cross-sector collaboration. Evaluate competitors strengths, weaknesses and market share to develop growth opportunities and setting of strategic goals.
  • Market Growth: Expand service offerings through advanced technologies and partnerships with acquired firms. Personally develop and maintain executive-level client relationships, identify strategic pursuits, participate in capture planning, and lead key business development initiatives that drive growth across state DOTs, toll authorities, transit agencies, and transportation consulting firms.
  • Team Management: Accountable for practice revenue, backlog, profitability, utilization, client satisfaction, and talent development. Responsible for achieving annual business plan targets and delivering sustainable growth.
    • Manage project/subproject managers in Colorado, Ohio, Texas and Virginia generating a minimum $12M annual sales goal.
    • Provide coaching and mentoring to foster individual career growth through 1:1 meetings and regular team meetings. Encourage open, two-way dialogue. Identify skill gaps and growth opportunities, create career paths aligned with individual aspirations.
    • Ensure a keen understanding of how the team’s efforts connect to the firm’s broader business goals.
    • Provide regular feedback, recognize achievements and address issues early.
  • Client Management: Serve as the Client Manager for strategic clients, providing day-to-day interactions, project scope/estimate development, innovative solutions, invoicing and evaluations.
  • Project Management: When appropriate/necessary serve as overall project manager on Transportation Geospatial projects. These are likely to be larger projects and/or where the Practice Leader possesses unique skillsets or technical expertise required for the execution of the project. When not managing projects, Practice Leader will apply their project management skills to monitor progress and health of projects within the Practice.
  • Operational Excellence: Monitor KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), revenue goals, backlog, and utilization metrics; implement corrective actions as needed. Ensure compliance with Woolpert’s project management standards and transportation geospatial-specific workflows.
  • Collaboration: Partner across Transportation, Aviation, Energy, Water, and Federal markets to identify opportunities for cross-selling and delivery of integrated solutions.
  • Career Development: Implement structured career pathways for project managers and technical staff. Support training compliance and mentorship programs to build leadership capacity within the practice.
  • Governance & Authority: Maintain signing authority for Transportation Geospatial proposals and contracts per corporate guidelines, Ensure adherence to Woolpert’s risk management and quality assurance standards.

Success in the First Year

  • Develop and implement a strategic growth plan.
  • Improve forecasting accuracy and project performance metrics.
  • Strengthen key client relationships.
  • Expand Transportation Geospatial backlog.
  • Build succession plans for critical leadership positions.
  • Advance adoption of innovative geospatial technologies.

What You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying or related field; PLS license preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in Land Surveying and project management.
  • Thorough understanding of survey and geospatial principles and practices with a deep understanding of base mapping/surveys related to transportation design applications.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and management of complex projects.
  • Strong leadership skills to create an inspiring and trusting team environment and effective collaboration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interaction with clients, team members, and corporate leadership. Strong presentation skills for representing the practice in meetings and conferences.
  • Strong Business acumen with experience in sales forecasting and market strategy.

Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Pay Range

$165,000 - $206,200 USD
