Construction Supervisor (Night Shift), Power Generation Plant
About xAI
xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. Our team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This organization is for individuals who appreciate challenging themselves and thrive on curiosity. We operate with a flat organizational structure. All employees are expected to be hands-on and to contribute directly to the company’s mission. Leadership is given to those who show initiative and consistently deliver excellence. Work ethic and strong prioritization skills are important. All employees are expected to have strong communication skills. They should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with their teammates.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
You will oversee teams and contractors building critical power generation infrastructure — including concrete foundations, structural pours, underground electrical conduits/piping, turbine and generator supports, process equipment foundations, cooling systems, and related utilities — in a fast-moving, mission-critical environment. If you thrive on hands-on leadership during night shifts, complex industrial construction, and contributing to the power backbone for advanced AI infrastructure, join us to help build one of the most impactful power projects supporting the world's largest AI training systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee and coordinate concrete pouring, forming, finishing, and underground utility installations (electrical conduits, piping, manifolds, grounding systems, and process infrastructure) to meet the exacting specifications of a large-scale power generation facility, including gas turbine or combined-cycle plant components.
- Manage and schedule contractors, subcontractors, and on-site night shift crews to deliver project milestones for xAI’s power plant on time and to xAI’s stringent quality and safety standards.
- Ensure all contractors adhere to scope, delivering high-integrity concrete structures, underground electrical and utility systems, and equipment foundations critical to power generation, transmission support, and auxiliary systems.
- Monitor daily (night) progress of power plant construction, maintaining detailed logs, plot plans, and as-built documentation for foundations, piping/conduit networks, structural supports, and related infrastructure.
- Develop and enforce aggressive construction schedules while helping keep the multi-million-dollar power project on time and within budget in a high-velocity environment.
- Champion and enforce xAI’s safety program, building a zero-incident culture across employees, contractors, and subcontractors working around heavy process equipment, excavations, high-voltage areas, and industrial power systems during night operations.
- Lead, train, and supervise foremen and crews on the night shift, fostering teamwork, accountability, and effective communication in a high-stakes industrial power project.
- Proactively resolve on-site challenges — material delays, technical conflicts in underground electrical/process systems, sequencing issues, or night-shift coordination — with a focus on power plant reliability and uptime.
- Conduct regular site inspections to verify compliance with local regulations, environmental permits, safety protocols (especially for night work and heavy equipment), and xAI’s quality standards for power infrastructure.
- Prepare and present clear progress reports, construction metrics, and risk updates to senior leadership, highlighting night-shift accomplishments and any handover items.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years managing construction teams with strong emphasis on concrete work and underground utilities for large-scale industrial projects.
- 5+ years direct hands-on experience in concrete pouring, forming, finishing, and underground infrastructure (electrical conduits, piping, foundations) — ideally on power plants, substations, gas turbine installations, combined-cycle facilities, or other heavy industrial/power projects.
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Availability and willingness to work full night shift (with potential flexibility for evenings/weekends as site needs dictate).
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Postsecondary diploma or degree in construction management, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field.
- Proven track record supervising concrete and underground construction for power generation plants, substations, turbine foundations, cooling systems, or similar process-industrial/power projects.
- Familiarity with Memphis/Southaven-area building codes, environmental regulations, and industrial permitting (TDEC, MDEQ, electrical/utility rules, or similar).
- Experience with construction management software (Procore, AutoCAD, MS Project, Primavera, etc.) in complex infrastructure or power builds.
- Deep knowledge of construction critical paths, sequencing, and workflows for power generation/process facilities through commissioning and startup.
- Strong understanding of concrete specifications, grounding, waterproofing, and underground systems designed for electrical conveyance, heavy equipment foundations, and harsh industrial/power environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams under tight deadlines in industrial/power projects while maintaining collaboration, safety, and night-shift productivity.
- Expert-level commitment to safety and environmental best practices, with history of establishing strong safety cultures on regulated industrial sites (including night operations, lighting, and fatigue management).
- Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills for technically complex power/infrastructure scenarios.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, Project) for reporting and scheduling.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Subject to post-employment random drug testing.
- Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
- Comfortable working outdoors/in industrial environments at night with noise, heavy equipment, excavations, process piping, limited lighting, and power systems.
- Flexible availability for evenings/weekends as site needs dictate (night shift primary).
- Ability to lift 25+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor/tight conditions during night hours.
