We are seeking a Product Manager II to support our life sciences R&D product team in delivering scientific
software applications and platform capabilities for a leading pharmaceutical company. This mid-level role
combines technical product management expertise with execution excellence to manage established
applications, support product transformation initiatives, and drive continuous discovery across R&D domains.
You will work at the intersection of life sciences and technology, managing products that serve researchers,
scientists, and engineers in drug discovery, computational biology, and data science. This role requires the
ability to absorb complex product knowledge, conduct thorough business analysis, and translate scientific
requirements into actionable product specifications.
As a Product Manager II, you'll manage existing products and ongoing projects (not greenfield startups),
requiring comprehensive knowledge transfer from incumbent teams and deep collaboration with business
stakeholders. You'll work within a hybrid delivery model aligned to the client's Product Development Lifecycle
(PDLC), participating in governance checkpoints while executing in agile sprints.
What You'll Do
Product Knowledge Transfer & Ownership
- Document existing product knowledge including use cases, usage metrics, business processes, and
technical specifications - Capture and document non-functional product knowledge and decision rationale
- Absorb context from incumbent teams through structured transition sessions and documentation deepdives
- Take ownership of established applications requiring ongoing enhancement and modernization
- Manage portfolios of 5-10 smaller established applications OR focused ownership of tactical product
areas
Business Analysis & Requirements Development
- Analyze current product landscape, use cases, business processes, and customer needs
- Conduct user interviews with researchers, scientists, and R&D stakeholders
- Propose transformation strategies for existing legacy products
- Follow established PDLC processes to develop comprehensive product requirements
- Deliver Product Development Plans (PDPs) with clear acceptance criteria according to assigned priority
and timeline
Product Development & Delivery
- Serve as product manager during all product development phases
- Create clear, testable user stories and maintain backlog hygiene in Jira
- Actively participate in sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and Agile ceremonies
- Collaborate with engineering teams to define technical feasibility and design approaches
- Manage backlog prioritization using Jira, Confluence, and Jira Product Discovery
Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as primary point of contact for business requests for assigned products
- Map relevant stakeholders (influence, needs, communication frequency) and develop engagement
strategies - Execute stakeholder engagement strategies with agreed objectives
- Facilitate discovery workshops, requirements reviews, and user feedback sessions
- Build trusted relationships with R&D end-users and business owners
Technical Collaboration
- Work with application engineering, data platform, and infrastructure teams
- Understand product technical architecture, APIs, data flows, and integration points
- Navigate cloud technologies (GCP) and modern application development practices
- Monitor support channels and align requests with product strategy
- Collaborate on dependency management across multi-vendor teams
AI-Powered Product Management
- Leverage Gemini Pro and Atlassian AI for backlog prioritization and velocity forecasting
- Apply intelligent automation to requirements generation and documentation
- Participate in AI use case development with client teams
- Use GenAI tools for accelerated product documentation and analysis
Documentation & Knowledge Management
- Maintain comprehensive Confluence documentation for all assigned products
- Ensure runbook completeness for operational handoffs
- Integrate knowledge capture into daily workflows
- Create executive-ready materials for governance reviews and stakeholder presentations
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
Core Product Management Skills
- 5+ years of product management experience in technical or software product environments
- Strong business use case analysis capabilities
- Proven experience conducting user interviews and requirements gathering
- Excellent requirements documentation and user story writing skills
- Demonstrated stakeholder mapping and management abilities
- Working knowledge of software product development lifecycle
- Proven agile development experience with active participation in Scrum ceremonies
- Experienced user of Jira and Confluence
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of cloud technologies (GCP experience highly valued)
- Understanding of APIs, data flows, and modern application architectures
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineering teams and translate technical concepts
- Familiarity with software development practices and technical terminology
- Basic understanding of data engineering concepts and database technologies
Communication & Collaboration
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to bridge conversations between technical teams and business stakeholders
- Proven ability to work effectively across time zones (UK/US collaboration)
- Strong facilitation skills for workshops and discovery sessions
Recommended Qualifications
Life Sciences & Domain Expertise
- Experience in pharmaceutical or regulated industry environments
- Understanding of scientific research workflows in chemistry, biology, or omics domains
- Familiarity with scientific software applications and computational science tools
- Knowledge of GxP requirements and compliance in life sciences
- Understanding of scientific data types and research methodologies
Technical & Platform Knowledge
- Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) environments
- Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform services (BigQuery, Cloud Run, Workflows)
- Understanding of authentication systems (SSO, LDAP)
- Knowledge of zero-downtime deployment strategies
- Experience with scientific computing applications common in pharmaceutical environments
- Understanding of data movement challenges for large scientific datasets
Strategic Skills
- Experience supporting product transformation and modernization initiatives
- Background in managing external vendor relationships and integration points
- Understanding of portfolio rationalization and technical debt management
- Capability to support cost optimization analysis
- Experience with change management and user adoption strategies
Advanced Capabilities
- Certification in relevant cloud technologies (GCP, AWS, Azure)
- Experience with AI/ML platform capabilities
- Knowledge of data engineering tools (Spark, Airflow, dbt)
- Familiarity with bioinformatics or cheminformatics software vendors
- Background in data governance and metadata management

- Participate in bi-weekly sprint planning, retrospectives, and delivery reviews
- Maintain continuous backlog grooming and refinement via Jira/Confluence
- Attend daily stand-ups and provide regular status reporting
- Complete and current Confluence documentation for all products
- Timely risk identification and escalation through Program Managers
- Active participation in PDLC checkpoints as required
