The Role
We are seeking a technically minded International Tax Manager to fill a newly created role in our Tax Team. This position is based in our Singapore office, where you will manage the APAC tax function and contribute to the Firm’s global tax agenda.
As the go-to subject matter expert in Permanent Establishments (PE), transfer pricing (TP), withholding tax (WHT), GST, and other international tax matters across the APAC region, you will collaborate with local business teams as well as global tax and finance teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse cross-border activities (e.g., royalties, services, business profits) and operating models to provide technical and practical advice on TP, PE, WHT, and GST across APAC jurisdictions.
- Interpret and apply relevant tax treaties, including the Principal Purpose Test (PPT) and Limitation of Benefits (LOB) provisions, where applicable to our business.
- Identify deviations between domestic laws and the OECD framework, while advising on practical implications.
- Manage a wide range of tax issues across various jurisdictions, effectively navigating different tax authority interpretations and approaches within the region.
- Provide tax analysis for expansion into new markets.
- Monitor Pillar Two emerging themes and anticipate the impact across APAC.
- Thoroughly document tax positions and prepare comprehensive technical memos.
Essential Attributes
- Strong technical expertise in APAC tax systems and global tax principles. We expect that you will have 5-10 years professional experience in the relevant area but won’t discount candidates outside this range.
- Highly proficient in interpreting treaty texts, OECD Commentary, domestic statutes, case law, and administrative guidance, with the ability to clearly articulate where they converge or diverge.
- Demonstrated track record of conducting in-depth PE analyses from a technical and legal perspective.
- Familiarity with issues relating to the characterisation of cross-border flows, as well as considerations specific to the financial services sector.
- Interest in other disciplines such as accounting, regulatory compliance, and company law, as well as their interaction with tax.
- Enjoy tackling new and complex issues and developing effective, clear solutions.
- Ability to communicate complex tax issues clearly and pragmatically to non-tax stakeholders.
- Fluency in English, ideally with experience working as part of an international team.
- Proven experience in automating tax processes to improve efficiency and reduce operational inefficiencies.
