About the Role

We are looking for an Optical Quality Technician that will play a critical role in our manufacturing facility by testing, documenting, and routing non-conforming eyeglass lenses. Operating at the intersection of quality control and laboratory operations, the Quality Technician uses precision optical measuring instruments to test lenses, inspect rejected lenses, identify the exact root cause of failure, and accurately record defect metrics in our Laboratory Management System (LMS). Reporting to the Quality Supervisor, this work directly ensures fast turnaround times for customer remakes while providing actionable quality data to prevent repeat manufacturing errors.

Please note: as a condition of employment for this role, you will be required to undergo pre-employment drug testing in accordance with our company policies and applicable law.

Responsibilities:

Defect Analysis & Quality Inspection:

  • Perform Detailed Inspection: Inspect non-conforming single-vision, progressive, and specialty lenses using manual lensometers, digital lens analyzers, calipers, photometers, and high-intensity bench lighting.
  • Identify Root Causes: Determine precise failure points across manufacturing processes—including generator marks, wave/power errors, axis/prism errors, AR coating crazing, edger chips, or material defects.
  • Verify Specifications: Cross-reference physical lenses against ANSI/ISO standards and original prescription job tickets.

Electronic Documentation & LMS Data Entry

  • Log Defect Metrics: Promptly log non-conforming items into the Laboratory Management System (LMS) using standardized defect taxonomies and failure codes.
  • Initiate Remakes: Authorize and generate immediate digital remake tickets to minimize overall job turnaround delays.
  • Data Integrity: Ensure accurate attribution of defect origin (e.g., department, machine, shift, material, or operator) to maintain reliable quality reporting.

Departmental Operations & Process Improvement

  • Physical Tray Management: Maintain organized sorting bins for scrapped components and ensure proper hazardous/optical waste disposal protocols.
  • Feedback Loop: Partner with cross-functional department supervisors to flag real-time defect spikes or machine calibration failures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in weekly quality reviews to analyze data and recommend process adjustments.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 1+ year in a manufacturing  environment. Must be able to demonstrate critical thinking and reasoning skills, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to operate lensometers, thickness gauges,  optical layout systems, and precision testing equipment.
  • Technical Aptitude: Experience working with optical Laboratory Management Systems and optical testing equipment.
  • Attention to Detail: Excellent visual acuity (with or without vision correction) and fine visual discrimination under varied lighting conditions.
  • Sound Judgment: Ability to ask thoughtful questions, respectfully challenge assumptions, and seek clarity when evaluating decisions or recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in Quality Assurance
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically, Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong understanding of lens optics, prescription variables (Sphere, Cylinder, Axis, Add Power, Prism), lens materials (CR-39, Polycarbonate, High-Index, Trivex), and coatings (AR, Photochromic, Hard Coat).

Perks & Benefits:

  • Annual Bonus Program
  • Employee Paid - Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401K & matching)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Public Holidays)
  • Training & Development

  • Employee assistance program
  • Flexible spending account
  • Health savings account
  • Vision insurance

At Zenni Optical, people remain the heart of our mission, even as we embrace technology that moves us forward. While we recognize the immense promise of AI, we are equally mindful of its limitations and use these tools strictly to assist our Talent Acquisition team rather than replace human judgment. We utilize AI tools as a collaborative partner to create content–such as job descriptions, interview questions, and outreach messaging–and review resumes, but we maintain a firm commitment to human-led hiring where AI never makes a final decision. Every selection is determined by a member of our team to ensure every candidate is personally valued by a human rather than an algorithm.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We strive to build a diverse team of individuals with a broad range of experience and perspectives. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t feel you meet all the qualifications.

Zenni Optical is an equal opportunity workplace and considers applications without regard to race, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, or Veteran status. We also consider qualified applicants regardless of criminal histories, consistent with legal requirements.
