SUMMARY 

The AccuWeather Technology organization is seeking a highly motivated leader with exceptional strategic, operational, entrepreneurial, and interpersonal skills and deep expertise in web-based platforms and API’s to join the Digital Technology leadership team as Senior Director, Technology.  Someone who likes to experiment, innovate, and engineer breakthrough customer experiences, bring simplicity to software engineering, and drive quality throughout the organization.

As the Senior Director, Technology, you'll lead and influence a high performing middleware and R&D team to consistently deliver complex web, mobile app, AI, and other prototypes, production middleware solutions, and drive innovation, cutting-edge technologies, and world-class quality into AccuWeather's products.  We are looking for someone who is technically strong, energetic, highly collaborative, and passionate about software architecture, design and implementation, AccuWeather's products, and our customers.

This position is located onsite at AccuWeather's facilities in either State College, PA or NYC.  

 
RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Champion a culture of innovation by guiding the identification, exploration, and rapid prototyping of emerging technologies, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of industry trends
  • Establish processes for ideation and experimentation, enabling teams to develop and validate new concepts quickly, iterate effectively, and transition prototypes into production
  • Direct the design, development, and maintenance of critical middleware layers and orchestration systems that enable seamless communication and data flow between applications and services
  • Collaborate with Product, Program Management, and stakeholders to define strategic Technology roadmaps, ensuring R&D goals, middleware requirements, and proof-of-concept initiatives align with broader business objectives
  • Guide teams in building highly available, resilient, and performance-oriented solutions, leveraging cloud platforms, CDN’s, and distributed systems best practices
  • Implement and refine Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD practices; promote continuous improvement in coding standards, frameworks, and monitoring to achieve world-class engineering quality
  • Recruit and retain high-caliber engineering team members, providing on-going coaching and feedback to cultivate a collaborative, innovative, and diverse team environment
  • Encourage knowledge sharing, thought leadership, and curiosity in internal and external tech communities, ensure on-going professional growth and the adoption of cutting-edge practices
  • Engage with external vendors and partners to identify, develop, and integrate new solutions that enhance the company’s technological capabilities, focusing on timely delivery and ROI
  • Participate in defining the broader Technology strategy and budget, ensuring R&D and middleware initiatives are effectively prioritized, funded, and managed.

  
QUALIFICATIONS 

  • BS/BA in related discipline with 12+ years’ experience and 7+ years’ management experience
  • Proven history of technical and organizational leadership
  • Proven ability to lead and work within geographically distributed engineering teams
  • Mastery of software engineering and testing processes and concepts
  • Mastery of Agile, DevOps, Automation, and CI/CD processes and concepts
  • Deep understanding of and experience with global, large scale, distributed platforms
  • Deep understanding of and experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)
  • Deep understanding of and experience with content delivery network (CDN) implementation and caching strategies
  • Experience with AI, Machine Learning, and data science
  • Experience with performance engineering and monitoring, logging, and analytics tools
  • Proficient in C#, Java, Objective-C, or similar
  • Experience leading teams of 20 or more software engineers
  • Experience managing contracting vendors and consultants
  • Self-driven; strong problem-solving skills; adaptable, proactive, and willing to take ownership
  • Strong verbal / written communication skills; excellent collaboration, reporting, and analytical skills
