Compliance Associate

Acumen is looking for a Compliance Associate to join our Legal team, based in New York. We’re seeking someone with a minimum of 3 years of experience in operations or paralegal roles, ideally in global organizations spanning non-profit, social enterprise, and for-profit sectors. The right candidate is skilled, creative, kind, pragmatic, respectful and can excel in a fast-paced environment. Acumen has a hybrid work model, with 3 days in the office.

About the role
Acumen has an increasingly complex network of affiliates across 7 geographies and 30+ entities (with global and regional operations teams). The Compliance Associate will provide a wide range of support to the program, fundraising, and operations teams and will be responsible for the adherence to the requirements of various regulations and funders. Reporting to the Risk and Compliance Manager, the Compliance Associate’s accountabilities will include:

  • Support of policy rollout and maintenance in collaboration with relevant program and operational functions, including collaborating with the Risk and Compliance Manager to design various team trainings and adapt organizational practices as needed.
  • The following responsibilities are assigned with the expectation that the Compliance Associate will take individual ownership of the tasks within the first year of employment:
    • Monitor the continuing compliance needs for Acumen’s various philanthropic entities, maintaining the organization’s entity tracker and filing schedule and supporting requisite filings and registrations.
    • Support the compliance needs for Acumen’s various investment funds, leading the response to various diligence questionnaires, reports, filings and registrations.
    • Track compliance with the organization’s records strategy, ensuring efficiency and completeness across Acumen’s various geographies and entities.
  • In partnership with the organization’s Risk and Compliance Manager, support internal audit and review of Acumen’s required procedures across program and operational functions, including (but not limited to) adherence to the organization’s a) procurement policy, b) anti-money laundering policy, d) travel & security procedures, and e) data privacy policy.
  • Support general initiatives and various needs of the Legal function.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in operations or paralegal roles, ideally in global organizations spanning non-profit, social enterprise, and for-profit sectors. 
  • Strong organizational and diplomacy skills and the ability to work and deliver various, simultaneous projects independently, proactively and under pressure
  • Strong curiosity and proven learning orientation especially towards process, systemization, and organizational efficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated track record of task ownership and end-to-end management on deliverables.
  • Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail and follow-through
  • Commitment to, and enthusiasm for, Acumen’s mission and business model, a sense of the sector’s inherent challenge
  • Aptitude for and comfort navigating ambiguity, and striving to create clarity, with a constant emphasis on integrity and ethical behavior

  • Bilingual Spanish and/or French and English speakers preferred.

The salary range for this role is $60,000 to $65,000 plus a performance-based bonus in New York. This range represents the present low and high end of pay range for this role. Actual compensation will vary based on various factors including but not limited to experience. Acumen has equal pay, so pay is determined through comparison to a cohort of employees in the market at the same level of accountability.
