Data Platform Engineer
This is Adyen
Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft - making us the financial technology platform of choice. At Adyen, everything we do is engineered for ambition.
For our teams, we create an environment with opportunities for our people to succeed, backed by the culture and support to ensure they are enabled to truly own their careers. We are motivated individuals who tackle unique technical challenges at scale and solve them as a team. Together, we deliver innovative and ethical solutions that help businesses achieve their ambitions faster.
Reporting is a foundational pillar of Adyen’s product offering. It enables our broad portfolio of merchants to conduct business critical activities (e.g. financial reconciliation) and helps them optimize how they accept payments from their customers. It gives confidence to agencies across the globe that Adyen is compliant with regulations such as Anti-money laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC), GDPR, etc. It is a key driver of trust and satisfaction for all our merchants and partners.
As a Data Platform Engineer, you will join the team building a cutting-edge, self-service reporting platform. You won't just be moving data; you'll be creating the trusted, scalable foundation that delivers accurate and timely insights to our merchants. You will work closely with stakeholders across the company to understand key pain points and set a new standard for how data is shared with Merchants at Adyen.
You’ll be asked to both build new tools and improve the existing tooling. This role is perfect for you if you're passionate about the following:
- Engineering elegant, large-scale data systems. You're passionate about building robust platforms from the ground up that can handle massive volumes of data with high performance and reliability. You build things to last and scale.
- Empowering developers through self-service tooling. You get energy from creating frameworks and APIs that enable other engineering teams to build data products and share insights with merchants seamlessly and securely. Your goal is to make the complex feel simple for your users.
- Championing data quality and governance. For you, data isn't useful unless it's accurate, timely, and discoverable. You're keen on building frameworks for data validation, lineage, and metadata management to create a foundation of trust.
- Automating for operational excellence. You believe in the 'automate everything' mindset. You're passionate about building and refining CI/CD pipelines, observability stacks (monitoring, logging, tracing), and infrastructure-as-code to make our platform resilient and easy to manage.
- Driving innovation to accelerate insights. You're always exploring new technologies and techniques—from faster processing engines to novel data modeling practices—with the clear goal of reducing the time it takes for our merchants to get critical business insights.
- Obsessing over the end-user experience. Whether the user is a merchant consuming a report or a developer using your platform, you are passionate about understanding their pain points and delivering solutions that are not just technically sound, but also intuitive and impactful.
Who you are
We are looking for people who can help us build a world-class self-service reporting platform. You don't need to be an expert in everything, but you should be excited to learn and grow. We believe you'll succeed in this role if you have the following profile:
- You are a natural collaborator and communicator. You thrive in a team environment and excel at bridging the gap between different technical domains. You can clearly articulate complex ideas to the platform users you enable (like analysts and product engineers) and the infrastructure teams you depend on (like Core Data platform, SRE and Security teams).
- You have 7+ years of experience building strong foundation in software engineering. You write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, with proficiency in a language like Java or Python. You apply software engineering best practices to data challenges.
- You build with craftsmanship and a focus on governance. You have hands-on experience applying modern data engineering best practices to design and operate data-intensive systems. You’re not just building pipelines (both real-time with Kafka and batch with Airflow/Spark); you’re implementing robust data governance frameworks to ensure the systems you create are reliable, maintainable, and trustworthy.
- You understand the infrastructure that powers data platforms. You have experience deploying and managing applications on containerized environments (Kubernetes, Docker) or have a strong background in the Hadoop ecosystem (Yarn, HDFS). You appreciate the importance of a solid foundation for building scalable services.
Bonus points if you have:
- Experience with data observability and monitoring tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
- A deep interest in data modeling, schema evolution, and data contracts.
- Familiarity with OLAP databases such as Apache Druid, ClickHouse, or Pinot.
