Software Engineer, Marketplace

San Francisco

Airbyte is the open-source standard for EL(T). We enable data teams to replicate data from applications, APIs, and databases to data warehouses, lakes, and other destinations. We believe only an open-source approach can solve the problem of data integration, as it enables us to cover the long tail of integrations while enabling teams to adapt pre-built connectors to their needs.

So far, we've built over 350 connectors and have had 60,000+ companies replicating data with us. We've raised $181M from some of the world's top investors (Benchmark, Accel, Altimeter, Coatue, Y Combinator, etc.) and believe in product-led growth, where we build something awesome and let our product bring the users, rather than an outbound sales engine with cold calls.

Airbyte is a hybrid workplace with most of the team based in Silicon Valley. We’re committed to providing as much context to our current employees and candidates. The Airbyte company handbook, core values, methodology, strategy, and roadmap are open to all.

Unless stated otherwise, all roles are Hybrid in our Embarcadero office Tuesday through Thursday. If you find this role exciting, we encourage you to apply even if you think you don’t meet all requirements.

Opportunity

With Connector Builder and the Marketplace, we’ll commoditize API data pipelines, and make reading data from any APIs consistently, reliably, and fast available to all engineers, so they can focus on their application logic instead of data pipelines.

Connector Builder is a powerful low-code IDE that is highly flexible. It supports hundreds of connectors already, and supports custom Python components where low-code YAML spec is too constraining.

It also integrates a Co-pilot-style LLM that helps folks make connectors faster, so you get a chance to work on an AI dev tool!

You will focus on the Connector Builder backend. It’s a Java / Kotlin application, running in K8s, that works with the Python Airbyte low-code CDK framework. You’ll help us make Builder even more extensible, while keeping it secure, fast, and robust.

What You'll Do

  • Build new features in Connector Builder and Marketplace.
    • A few examples: Co-pilot-style LLM integration in connector builder, contributing PRs with changes to existing connectors from Builder UI, OAuth flow support from within Connector Builder, automatic manifest compatibility migrations when we roll out larger upgrades.
  • Empower the rest of the Marketplace team, community engineers, and Python sources team to use Builder to make our existing connectors great.
  • Work on making Connector Builder flexible and extensible yet secure.
  • Work closely with the community of engineers using Builder in and outside of Airbyte. Engage with the open source community via Slack, events, and GitHub issues and PRs.
  • Help shape our roadmap — spike and prototype projects, advocate for important initiatives.
  • Mentor other engineers.
  • Write high-leverage code.

What You'll Need

  • Expert knowledge of modern Java and Kotlin in backend applications.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of working with Python. You don’t have to be an expert, but you’d have to be comfortable in Python codebases.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Experience using LLM APIs to create tools or interest in doing so.
  • Experience building developer tools is a plus.
  • Experience working directly with the users of your products, onboarding and supporting them.
  • Experience leading an engineering team, leveling up other engineers around you, and supporting other teams in your organization. If you’ve been a team lead, but you’re choosing to focus on building great dev tools yourself, this is a great team for you. You’ll be able to work highly autonomously.
  • An insatiable desire to ship, relentlessly improving user experience.
  • Ability to influence without authority and work with engineers junior and senior.
  • A passion for continuous learning and improvement (both at a personal and team level).
  • Belief in our values

Location

  • San Francisco. Hybrid, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
