Principal Software Engineer
Principal Software Engineer
Do you love tinkering with devices? Have you automated your own home? Do you love to mentor and collaborate with other engineers?
If the above holds true for you, then we would love to talk to you! Alarm.com is looking for a versatile Principal Software Engineer to join our team. We’re doing work in smart home technology, video analytics, large scale data processing, and much more. You’ll have the opportunity to work across a variety of technology domains and own projects from design to deployment.
We have a growing engineering department and we’re looking for people that are excited to mentor and collaborate with more junior engineers. You will own projects and you must be able to communicate effectively and blend multiple business needs in your work.
WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ALARM.COM?
A Principal Software Engineer oversees the research, development, and design of engineering projects for the company. The Principal Software Engineer will support the business objectives by collaborating with business partners to identify opportunities and drive resolution; partnering with business stakeholders to define priorities; identifying short- and long-term solutions; and leading cross-functional partnership.
Very few small companies innovate and develop across such a broad range of technologies as Alarm.com. This position is ideal for the candidate who seeks a small, friendly company culture where one can work closely with smart and highly productive people. Getting to work with cutting edge software and hardware to develop outstanding consumer products is the icing on the cake.
DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Mentor groups of junior, senior, lead, and staff engineers
- Help build and cultivate innovation by driving cross-collaboration and execution of projects across multiple teams and knowledge domains
- Develop full stack software for a wide variety of platforms and technologies
- Provide technical thought leadership in designs and major software components, systems, and features and effect their buy-in
- Engage in the research, evaluation, and application of new technologies and methodologies to solve challenging problems and optimize engineering solutions
- Work closely with product owners and business stakeholders to execute strategies and define roadmaps
- Work hard and be flexible: we have quick development cycles, evolving requirements, and lots of cross-team collaboration.
- Be an expert on system architecture, functionality, and data flows as well as operations processes and tools
- Supervise and oversee the technical aspects of multiple projects
- Exercise good judgment. Know when to work quickly, when to build a robust solution, and also when building a new solution is not required. Your work will be used by multiple business units, so you will need to consider many use cases when developing.
- Bring your ideas! We want our engineers to collaborate on product development, not blindly build to a spec.
- Other duties as assigned.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
- Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field or equivalent work experience
- 15+ years of professional software development experience
- Experience leading and/or mentoring other engineers with a proven track record of developing people and solutions that are reusable by other engineers
- Proven expertise in object-oriented programming skills; C# and .NET experience is a plus
- Ability to select new frameworks and architecture designs, educate other teams about them and effect their buy-in
- Significant database design, performance, and development experience
- Superior analytical skills with a problem-solving attitude
- Ability to perform across teams
- Independent thinker and problem solver
- Understanding of UI tech stacks, needs and limitations
- Expertise in object-oriented design and software lifecycles
- Experience working with physical systems and hardware devices a major plus
