About the Role

Alumni Ventures (AV) is looking for an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead and continually evolve our accounting function as we scale. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role plays a critical part in building strong, efficient accounting processes and ensuring accurate, timely, and transparent financial reporting across the firm.

This is a builder role—ideal for a technically strong accounting leader who wants to move beyond traditional environments and help design scalable systems in a high-growth, investment-driven organization. The Controller will oversee core accounting operations including month-end close, financial reporting, audits, and support for budgeting and forecasting, while maintaining a high bar for accuracy, controls, and compliance.

As AV continues to grow, we’re looking for a leader who is excited to embrace new technologies, including automation and AI, and serve as a change agent within the accounting function. This person will help modernize workflows, improve data quality, and drive smarter, more efficient ways of working across the department. This role can be based in Manchester, NH (preferred) or Boston, MA and is hybrid, with an in-office expectation of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

What You’ll Do

  • Own and continuously improve AV’s accounting operations, processes, and internal controls
  • Lead accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close cycles
  • Produce and review monthly financial statements and reporting packages
  • Maintain a deep understanding of AV’s general ledger structure and financial reporting flows
  • Oversee positive pay processing and other key cash controls
  • Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives
  • Collaborate with finance teammates and cross-functional partners to support firm-wide goals
  • Respond to financial inquiries from executive leadership and internal stakeholders
  • Partner with the CFO to ensure a smooth, efficient year-end audit
  • Drive special projects, system enhancements, and process improvements as AV scales
  • Champion the use of technology, automation, and AI to improve accounting workflows, accuracy, and scalability
  • Act as a change agent by identifying opportunities to modernize systems, processes, and reporting
  • Oversee expense reimbursement processes and expense management platforms
  • Partner with the HR team on payroll, benefits-related accounting, and 401(k) true-ups
  • Ensure proper accounting treatment and documentation for equity and debt activity
  • Manage year-end filings including Form 5500, 1099s, and other required reporting
  • Stay current on GAAP, FASB standards, and relevant tax and regulatory updates
  • Contribute positively to AV’s culture by modeling our values and working toward our North Stars

Who You Are

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
  • Strong technical accounting expertise with sound judgment
  • Advanced Excel skills, including complex reconciliations and models
  • Experience working in an ERP environment; NetSuite experience required
  • Experience supporting complex, multi-entity structures; cross-border experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with payroll and expense management systems
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and meet frequent, tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Curious and forward-thinking, with a track record of adopting new tools and technologies to improve finance operations
  • Comfortable operating as a change agent in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Our benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k match, HSA, FSA, Life Insurance, Pet Insurance, Flexible PTO, and Parental Leave as well as career development.

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
