Are you looking to combine your mastery of enterprise architecture with a mission-driven focus? Appian delivers mission-critical business impact fast and are directly responsible for partnering with our customers to bring their best ideas to life. Joining the Federal Go To Market team provides you with the platform to help capture programs within the U.S. Army’s most ambitious digital transformation initiatives.
We are seeking an Army Chief Architect to serve as the strategic technical authority for our U.S. Army sales and capture initiatives. In this role, you will be the primary architect responsible for the design, integrity, and scalability of Appian solutions that support the Army’s modernization efforts. You will bridge the gap between complex mission requirements and technical strategy, ensuring the Army leverages the full power of Appian’s AI-powered platform.
Responsibilities
- Sales Enablement & Deal Capture: Partner directly with Sales and Business Development executives to develop technical win themes, deliver compelling solution demonstrations, and write technical volumes for proposals, directly contributing to the capture of multi-million dollar contracts.
- Strategic Technical Leadership: Serve as a technical advisor for the U.S. Army stakeholders, translating high-level mission goals into robust enterprise architectures, and acting as a key technical resource in high-stakes capture efforts and strategic pursuits.
- AI & Innovation: Brainstorm Army-specific AI use cases and implement Appian’s AI tools—applying retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic workflows, and private AI models—to modernize combat support and administrative processes, and demonstrating this cutting-edge capability to drive program interest and differentiate Appian from competitors.
- Mission-Critical Delivery: Work throughout the entire project life-cycle to ensure solutions meet rigorous performance, security, and scalability standards within secure DoD environments (Impact Levels 4, 5, and 6), ensuring successful initial delivery that leads to expansion opportunities and referenceability for the Sales team.
- Mentorship & Excellence: Lead and mentor a team of architects and consultants, fostering a culture of technical excellence and ensuring adherence to Appian best practices across the portfolio, with a focus on ensuring a repeatable, high-quality technical baseline that supports the GTM strategy.
- Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with Army Program Managers, G-level leadership, and cross-functional engineering teams to drive adoption and ensure long-term program success. Act as the Appian technical champion in front of C/G-level decision-makers and influence technical evaluation criteria in major procurements.
- Cyber Security: Provide oversight for teams on issues of cyber security and related topics such as: eMASS Governance, IL6+ Service Design, Strategy, and DoW CyberOps, positioning Appian as the most secure and compliant low-code solution for Army needs. Ensure that architectures comply with RMF (Risk Management Framework) and DISA security requirements, and leveraging this expertise as a competitive advantage during bid submissions and technical negotiations.
Qualifications
- Enterprise Architecture Mastery: 10+ years of experience in enterprise software architecture, with a proven track record of delivering large-scale, complex systems.
- Defense Sector Experience: Prior experience architecting solutions for the U.S. Army or DoD is required. Familiarity with Army-specific data environments and mission-critical workflows is a major plus.
- Technical Depth: Strong understanding of relational databases, SQL, and API integrations (REST/SOAP). Knowledge of DevSecOps pipelines, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and cloud hosting (AWS GovCloud / Azure Government).
- AI Fluency: Familiarity with generative AI, prompt engineering, and the application of AI within secure, regulated environments.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical senior military leadership. Excellent writing skills are a plus.
Education & Clearance: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Must hold an active Secret or Top Secret clearance.
