Job Purpose
The Field Archaeological Technician is a developmental position that supports the project team by assisting in archaeological surveys and other related tasks in Michigan market. In this role, an employee will be expected to develop and demonstrate proficiency within the following responsibilities and competencies:
Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeological investigations including pedestrian and shovel test surveys, testing and evaluation, excavation, and construction monitoring.
- Use electronic and traditional navigational equipment (GPS/iPAD/ArcCollector/Survey123, compass, and transit) to orient yourself and perform fieldwork in occasionally remote locations.
- Identify artifacts, ecofacts, features, structures, unique environmental features, and photo-document these items in the field and conduct a basic evaluation of these items.
- Ability to conduct basic lab preparation, cataloging, and analyses, and other duties as assigned.
- Assist with data collection, record keeping, photo documentation, data input, and production of archaeological/cultural resource reports.
- Maintain safe working environment by complying with Atwell and/or site-specific Health and Safety Plans and using proper personal protection equipment.
Education & Experience
- Physical ability to work entirely in the field, including walking long distances in varying weather conditions, bending and squatting to inspect the ground surface and excavations, sitting, or standing for extended periods of time, and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to excavate shovel tests and excavation units, screen soil and related tasks are required.
- Knowledgeable of archaeological methods, protocols, and guidelines.
- Must be able to prepare and maintain accurate notes and other documentation resulting from fieldwork.
- Travel for extended periods of time.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work on a team.
- Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
- Current valid driver’s license.
- Must have earned a BA or BS degree and one full year or more of archaeological survey experience.
- Technical writing and skills[BT1] are desirable.
- Previous archaeological construction monitoring experience is desirable.
- Preference will be given to qualified Technicians in or within commuting distance of the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska).
Compensation
- $30 - $35 per hour and time and a half for all hours worked after the first 40 in a week (benefits not included).
- Single occupancy lodging will be provided or Per Diem.
- Technicians are expected to commute to and from the project site. Compensation will not be provided for commute time.
