Position Summary
The Civil Engineer I supports the Land Development team in the planning, design, and delivery of residential, commercial, and mixed-use development projects. This role is responsible for preparing engineering designs, technical documents, and permit applications while collaborating with project teams, clients, and regulatory agencies. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically proficient, and eager to apply fundamental engineering principles to real-world land development projects.
Essential Functions
- Collaborate with project team members and clients on land development projects under the direction of senior staff.
- Prepare preliminary and final site plans, engineering calculations, reports, permit applications, and supporting project documentation for review by senior staff.
- Assist with due diligence efforts, including site analysis, zoning reviews, utility evaluations, engineer’s opinions of probable cost, and project scheduling.
- Research and interpret local and state zoning ordinances, development regulations, and design standards.
- Conduct site visits and field investigations as required.
- Review survey data and existing site information, including legal descriptions, ALTA surveys, easement documents, and existing infrastructure conditions.
- Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and other engineering software to develop design plans and technical deliverables in accordance with company quality standards.
- Respond to agency and client review comments by revising plans and supporting project resubmittals.
- Assist senior staff with communication and coordination efforts involving clients, agencies, utility providers, and project stakeholders.
- Manage assigned tasks and workload effectively while communicating project needs, priorities, and schedule impacts to Project Managers and Directors.
- Apply sound engineering judgment and fundamental civil engineering principles to support project objectives.
Technical Skills
- AutoCAD Civil 3D: Proficient in drafting, data references, grading design, pipe networks, and preparation of technical construction documents.
- Bluebeam: Skilled in document review, markups, QA/QC processes, and Studio Sessions.
- Microsoft Office Suite: Proficient in Excel for data analysis and Word for technical reports and project documentation.
- Grading & Drainage Design: Understanding of grading, stormwater management, and drainage design principles.
- Utility Design: Knowledge of water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer system design and coordination.
- Quantity Takeoffs & Cost Estimating: Ability to develop accurate quantity calculations and support project budgeting efforts.
- Zoning & Design Standards: Familiarity with local and state development regulations and permitting requirements.
- ADA Compliance: Working knowledge of accessibility standards and design requirements.
- Entitlements & Permitting: Understanding of development review processes, permitting requirements, and regulatory approvals.
- Construction Administration: Familiarity with construction-phase support, field observations, and design verification.
- Shop Drawing Review: Ability to review submittals for conformance with project plans and specifications.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification or successful completion of the FE Exam preferred.
- 0–3 years of experience supporting site development, land development, or civil infrastructure projects.
- Internship or co-op experience in civil engineering or land development is a plus.
