Axle is seeking a Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) located in Rockville, MD.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives
Under this task order, the contractor will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.
Deliverables:
- Work products and documents related to providing specialized scientific support, including participation on the design, planning, conduct, and evaluation of experiments involving the host immune responses to fungal pathogens. - Ad-Hoc
- Work products and documents related to maintaining accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks. - Ad-Hoc
- Work products and documents pertaining to a wide variety of complex procedures and techniques which may include (but are not limited to); cell culture, DNA analysis, DNA isolation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning, manipulation of radioactive isotopes, ELISAs, western blotting, PCRs, mouse fungal infection models, mouse genotyping. - Ad-Hoc
- Work products and documents related to interpreting, evaluating, and discussing the results of each experiment with the Principal Investigator as part of the planning process for subsequent studies. - Ad-Hoc

Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles. - 1

Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments. - 2

Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot instruments and equipment in the laboratory. - 3

Maintain a detailed and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments. - 4

Suggest alternative or complementary approaches to experiments. - 5
- Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratory's overall research program.
- Supports laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and the training of others in their use.
- Evaluates, analyzes and interprets research data, communicates results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
- Coordinates with junior staff to modify research protocols.
- Presents research at national scientific meetings and symposia.
- Review, edit, and as needed, write first drafts of papers, posters and manuscripts.
- Provides interpretation of results, guidance, and scientific support to the management team.
- Assist the lab staff in the creation and preparation of a variety of documents required by the lab’s scientific activities.
- Mentors junior level scientists.
- Train staff on the proper usage of equipment.
- Train laboratory staff to independently run the experiments and analyze the data.
- Provide specialized scientific support, including participation on the design, planning, conduct, and evaluation of experiments involving the host immune responses to fungal pathogens.

- Perform a wide variety of complex procedures and techniques which may include but are not limited to; cell culture, DNA analysis, DNA isolation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning, manipulation of radioactive isotopes, ELISAs, western blotting, PCRs, mouse fungal infection models, mouse genotyping.
- Perform complex experiments to unveil the relationship between host immune response and target organ of fungal pathogens.
- Interpret, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the Principal Investigator as part of the planning process for subsequent studies.

Minimum Education
Masters
Additional Qualifications:
Certifications & Licenses
- Master’s degree in a science related discipline
- Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a master’s degree
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a science related field

- Demonstrated experience working in the research laboratory environment
- Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of scientific specialty or subspecialty and related disciplines, such as biology, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, genetics, and/or biochemistry

This role has a market-competitive salary with an anticipated base compensation range listed below. Actual salaries will vary depending on a candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and location.
