Essential Job Duties

BambooHR is seeking a passionate and visionary Senior Director of Engineering to lead the development and evolution of our core platform. In this role, you will be responsible for driving the technical strategy, architecture, and execution for the foundation that powers our HR software solutions. You will lead a talented team of engineers, foster a culture of innovation, and collaborate closely with product, design, and other stakeholders to deliver exceptional value to our customers. This role requires a deep understanding of SaaS platforms, a passion for building scalable and reliable systems, and a strong commitment to engineering excellence.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Developing Future Leaders: Responsible for mentoring and coaching Directors and other engineering leaders, fostering their growth and preparing them for future leadership roles. This includes providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities for development.
  • Driving Performance and Productivity:  Set clear expectations and goals for their teams, ensuring alignment with the overall engineering and company objectives. They monitor performance, provide constructive feedback, and address any performance issues promptly.
  • Building a High-Performing Culture:  Foster a positive and inclusive work environment where collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement thrive. They promote open communication, resolve conflicts effectively, and build a sense of community within their teams.
  • Strategic Resource Allocation:  Effectively allocate resources, including engineering talent and budget, to prioritize key initiatives and ensure projects are adequately staffed and funded to achieve their goals.
  • Championing Organizational Alignment: Act as key liaisons between engineering and other departments, ensuring alignment on priorities, facilitating communication, and fostering a shared understanding of goals and roadmaps. This includes collaborating effectively with product, design, and executive leadership.

You will:

  • Develop and execute the engineering strategy for BambooHR's platform, ensuring alignment with the company's technology vision and product roadmap.
  • Lead architecture decisions, balancing short-term needs with long-term scalability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the platform engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Partner with product, design, and other stakeholders to ensure successful product development and launch, advocating for engineering best practices.
  • Drive operational efficiency and performance of the platform, ensuring high availability, security, and customer satisfaction.
  • Champion innovation and encourage the adoption of new technologies, guiding teams to experiment, take calculated risks, and learn from both successes and failures.
  • Develop technical leadership capabilities across teams, mentoring and guiding engineers to foster a strong pipeline of future leaders.
  • Proactively manage technical debt and ensure adherence to security and compliance standards.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including executives, stakeholders, and engineering teams, to ensure alignment and buy-in.
  • Utilize data and metrics to track progress, measure the impact of decisions, and monitor progress toward business goals.
  • Embrace and lead out in AI engineering practices, including how to build with AI and how to build AI into our products.

What You Need to Get the Job Done

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering leadership roles, with a proven track record of building and scaling high-performance platforms in a SaaS environment.
  • Deep understanding of cloud technologies (AWS, GCP), microservices architecture, data storage solutions, and API design.
  • Expertise in software development methodologies, including Agile and DevOps practices.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams, foster collaboration, and drive consensus.
  • Passion for building high-quality, scalable, and secure systems.
  • Experience with HR technology or a related domain is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
