About the Team

The Portfolio Risk & Data Analytics (PR&DA) group is responsible for conducting performance, portfolio, and risk analytics for the Baron Portfolio Strategies and investment products. Team members meet regularly with Portfolio Managers (PMs) to discuss market trends, drivers of absolute and relative performance, and changes in risk statistics. In addition, the team maintains databases used to perform custom analytics, analyzes performance dispersion between portfolios, systematically tracks trends in different metrics and fundamental KPIs, and provides support for product development efforts. Another function of the team is to design, develop, and conduct detailed investment risk, research and performance analytics using factor models and other external or proprietary tools. The team also supports the Firm’s internal research and external marketing efforts and is responsible for the production of periodic reports for the Firm’s CIOs, executives, and the Board of Trustees. Team members collaborate with each other and with departments across the Firm, including the Investment team (equity research analysts and PMs), IT developers, and accounting to dissect and analyze the Firm’s investment strategies exposures and performance and provide accurate reports and metrics summarizing results and characteristics.

About the Role

The Operations Associate is expected to understand the Firm’s portfolio objectives and investment processes, remain informed about the industry landscape and market events and trends, and leverage technology and various analytical tools to effectively support the efforts of the PR&DA team. The Operations Associate will be responsible for monthly reporting on various Sud-Advised and Separately Managed Accounts. The individual is expected to communicate results effectively to members of the PR&DA group, PMs, and other groups across the Firm when needed. Another important function is the management of PR&DA-related data for marketing materials, with the Operations Associate being relied upon to upload and review data in Baron’s internal systems.

Aside from reporting and marketing support, the Operations Associate will be responsible for the smooth operations of the group, including running scheduling of activities, overseeing projects schedules and progress, as well as database upkeep, maintaining mapping files and other operational activities that are integral for the group’s custom analytics. Another essential function is data quality control, with the Operations Associate conducting monthly performance checks for the Baron mutual funds and UCITS to maintain accuracy for internal and external reporting. This individual will also perform checks of various data sets to ensure accuracy and liaise with the necessary departments to correct any issues. Lastly, the Operations Associate will handle organizational and meeting management tasks for the group. This position requires a general understanding of financial markets and the investment management industry, and familiarity with portfolio analytics tools. A proactive and problem-solving attitude is essential to succeed in this role. The P&RA Group has a strong, team-based orientation, yet relies upon its members to take initiative and responsibility for their own individual projects. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to eloquently explain complicated concepts and results in simple terms are also key.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting and Marketing Support

  • Upload and review data in internal system used for marketing purposes
  • Provide periodic reports for select Sub-Advised and Separately Managed Accounts
  • Generate quarterly materials needed by various departments

Quality Control

  • Conduct monthly performance checks for Baron mutual funds and UCITS to warrant accuracy of internal and external reporting
  • Validate data sets and coordinate with departments to resolve issues
  • Assist in maintaining internal dashboards and reporting tools by ensuring timely data updates and flagging inconsistencies.

Database Maintenance

  • Maintain mapping files in FactSet for custom analytics
  • Implement and utilize FactSet Portfolio Services to flag potential issues with missing or incorrect classifications

Organizational, Administrative and Operational Support

  • Manage the team’s page on the Firm’s intranet, “the Baron Reef”
  • Track incoming requests and ensure deadlines are met
  • Manage and maintain team calendars, including scheduling recurring meetings, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and resolving conflicts.
  • Prepare agendas and distribute materials ahead of internal meetings and effectively take notes during meetings to ensure timely follow-up on action items and completion of tasks on schedule.
  • Assist with onboarding new team members by coordinating access to systems, tools, and training materials.
  • Maintain and organize shared drives and documentation repositories to ensure easy access and version control.
  • Support expense tracking and budget reconciliation for team-related activities and subscriptions.

Process Optimization

  •  Identify and implement improvements to administrative workflows to enhance team efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for recurring operational tasks.
  • Monitor task progress across projects and proactively flag delays or resource constraints.

Cross-Departmental Coordination

  •  Act as liaison between PR&DA and other departments (e.g., IT, HR, Compliance) to facilitate smooth execution of operational initiatives.
  • Coordinate logistics for team offsites, training sessions, and internal events.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting support for team tools and platforms, escalating issues when needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, finance, or statistics.
  • Experience with FactSet PA and/or Bloomberg.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of financial markets and investment management industry.
  • Familiar with Brinson two-factor attribution methodology.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and quantitative aptitude.

Skills and Abilities:

The base salary range for this position is based on skills, experience, qualifications, and internal equity. It is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. It also participates in the Firm's 401(k) and Profit-Sharing Plan.
