Job Title: GIS Technician I

Location: Austin, TX (In Office Role - South Austin - 1701 Directors Blvd)

Department: Technology Solutions – GIS

Position Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS Technician I to join our GIS team. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about geospatial technology and eager to grow their skills in a collaborative and innovative environment. The GIS Technician I will support the creation, maintenance, and analysis of spatial data and maps using the ESRI suite of tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare basic GIS exhibits using ArcGIS Pro.
  • Use ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online to access and utilize internal datasets.
  • Perform basic spatial edits using editor tools.
  • Organize and manage GIS file types (e.g., Geodatabases, Shapefiles).
  • Support data acquisition efforts for statewide and local GIS datasets.
  • Use pre-scripted tools and processes to generate deliverables.
  • Apply basic functions in ArcGIS tools (e.g., Field Calculator, labeling).
  • Communicate with GIS leadership to resolve data issues and provide feedback.
  • Prioritize tasks based on project needs and provide input on GIS processes.
  • Collaborate with team members to support project goals and maintain quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Certificate in GIS, Geographic Information Science & Technology (GIST), or a related field.
  • 0–1 years of relevant GIS experience (internships or academic projects acceptable).
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and basic GIS data formats.
  • Basic understanding of coordinate systems, datums, and projections.
  • Introductory knowledge of web GIS and ArcGIS Online/Portal.
  • Basic cartography and map-making skills.
  • Understanding of GPS technology and its integration with GIS.
  • Ability to articulate workflows and follow standard procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Technical Proficiency: Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and ESRI tools; ability to perform basic spatial data edits and create simple maps.
  • Data Management: Understanding of GIS data types and formats; ability to collect and organize spatial data.
  • Problem Solving: Awareness of critical thinking principles; ability to identify simple geographic features and spatial relationships.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to collaborate with team members and leadership.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Introductory understanding of self-awareness, self-reflection, and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage tasks and maintain work quality in a structured environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to SQL, Arcade, or other scripting environments is a plus.
  • Experience with GPS data collection or field mapping tools.
  • Familiarity with construction documents or CAD integration.
