Hourly range: $80 - $100 per hour

Blue Star Families (BSF) is a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting military families by providing programming and resources while strengthening their connections to their local communities. Independent Contractor Scope of Work:
The Communications Consultant, an independent contractor, will support BSF's annual PR and branding strategy. This involves producing high-level communications and advising on external visibility opportunities. The consultant will work on a project basis, maintaining control over service performance, consistent with the scope and deadlines agreed upon with the Vice President of Communications, Brand Marketing & Events, who will be the primary point of contact.
The Communications Consultant is responsible for:
- Content Creation: Develop original written content, including speeches, talking points, media briefings, social media copy, video scripts, emails, and letters.
- Strategic Advising: Collaborate with BSF Communications and Original Strategies to advise on visibility and communications strategy, aligning with BSF’s broader PR and branding efforts.
- Planning: Propose and outline a quarterly plan for communications deliverables, ensuring alignment with BSF’s annual communications priorities.
- Engagement Opportunities: Identify and recommend engagement opportunities, including outreach to high-profile individuals (e.g., senior military leaders, elected officials, influencers, media, donor prospects, celebrities, and community leaders) to support BSF events like salon dinners, themed campaigns, and cultivation events.
- Event Support: Provide mutually agreed-upon communications support for events.
Additional Engagement Terms
- The Consultant is responsible for determining how and when work is completed, provided that deliverables are submitted by agreed-upon deadlines.
- The Consultant may perform work for other clients and is not required to work exclusively with BSF.
- BSF will not provide tools, equipment, or workspace; all services will be performed independently.
- Other communications-related services may be requested, subject to mutual agreement and within the general scope of the engagement.
Desired Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience in strategic communications, PR, or executive content development
- Exceptional writing and editing skills across formats and platforms
- Experience supporting high-profile individuals and/or senior leadership
- Strong planning and strategic thinking skills; ability to align messaging with organizational objectives
- Prior experience supporting communications for events and campaigns
- Self-motivated, reliable, and able to meet deadlines independently
- Familiarity with military culture and veteran affairs (preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, or related field; advanced degree a plus

Deliverables & Payment Terms
All services shall be delivered in accordance with agreed deadlines and milestones. Payment structure to be outlined in a separate contract. BSF shall not direct how services are performed — only that deliverables meet agreed results.
