
Telecom Cable Locator (Fiber & Copper)
Position Overview
We are looking for a Telecom Cable Locator to accurately identify and mark the location of underground fiber-optic and copper telecommunications facilities to prevent damage during construction, excavation, and maintenance activities. In this role, you will use specialized locating equipment, maps, and engineering records to support safe excavation practices, protect critical network infrastructure, and ensure compliance with state One-Call regulations. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working independently in the field, and able to communicate clearly with contractors, 811 crews, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Locating & Marking
- Use electromagnetic locating equipment to trace and mark buried fiber and copper telecommunications cables.
- Mark utilities according to APWA color code standards (orange for telecom).
- Read and interpret telecom prints, as-built drawings, GIS records, and construction maps.
- Mark horizontal paths and estimate depth of underground facilities using flags, paint, or stakes.
2. Field Operations
- Respond to 811/One-Call tickets within required timeframes.
- Perform locates in residential, commercial, rural, and cross-country environments.
- Troubleshoot locating issues, such as poor grounding, broken tracer wire, or signal interference.
- Use sondes, inductive clamps, transmitters, and traceable duct rods for locating non-metallic conduit.
3. Documentation & Reporting
- Document locate activities through photos, field notes, and digital reporting systems.
- Notify supervisors of conflicts, mismapped facilities, or discrepancies between records and field conditions.
- Report hazards, plant conditions, and potential damage risks with detailed accuracy.
4. Customer & Contractor Interaction
- Communicate effectively with contractors, homeowners, utility crews, and municipal personnel.
- Explain locate markings, safe digging practices, and protection of high-priority facilities.
- Represent the company professionally and maintain a strong focus on safety and service quality.
Tools / Equipments:
- Electromagnetic utility locators (Vivax, Metrotech, Radiodetection, Tempo, etc.)
- Inductive clamps, transmitters, and receiver units
- Ground stakes, leads, and tracer equipment
- GPS-enabled tablets or smartphones for reporting and work-order management
- Sondes, traceable duct rods, and cable toners
- Company vehicle and required PPE
Knowledge / Skills:
- Understanding of fiber-optic and copper cable design (aerial, buried, and conduit).
- Ability to interpret telecom engineering prints, plats, and construction documents.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Self-motivation with the ability to work independently and manage daily route schedules.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Basic computer and tablet proficiency.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to walk long distances, lift 50+ lbs., and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in telecom, utility locating, construction, or outside plant work.
- Knowledge of fiber optics, copper plant infrastructure, or OSP construction methods.
- Prior 811 locating experience.
