Description:
Braskem, a global leader in the production of bio-based materials, has opened a new renewable research and development facility in Lexington, MA. This new 35,000-square-foot facility will bring together scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines to ideate and develop novel technologies for the production of bio-based chemicals and materials.
The HES Engineer will manage HES-related tasks for the company, as well as lead initiatives in occupational safety, employee health, industrial hygiene, behavior-based safety, process safety management, and environmental compliance. This position will serve as a member of the corporate HES team and liaise with sites throughout Braskem. The HES engineer will take a holistic view of the organization and work with Braskem to ensure compliance with internal HES standards and applicable regulatory requirements. This position will directly support the Facilities Manager with various facility-related duties, including, but not limited to, site support for facilities (vendor management, equipment, and building maintenance), as well as IT-related issues. The HES Engineer will report directly to the Facilities Manager and work closely with corporate and site leadership.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Program Development and Implementation:
- Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate potential hazards.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations.
- Facilitate regular meetings with stakeholders to review and implement HES policies.
- Plan and lead monthly safety committee meetings
- Manage all permitting/engagement with regulatory bodies, and lead lab tours for regulatory agents (fire department, department of health, OSHA, Department of Transportation, etc.).
- Develop and manage the annual HES budget
- Maintain an inventory of hazardous materials to support research and development and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
- Management of chemical and hazardous waste disposal and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements
- Adapt existing policies to align with corporate standards and applicable regulations.
Training and Education:
- Oversee and continually improve all HES-related employee training programs, including new hire training, refresher training, and in-person competency training for high-risk programs.
- Provide safety and HES regulatory compliance support for non-laboratory spaces.
- Support contractor safety program and safe work permitting; establish a prequalification process for vendors.
Inspections and Audits:
- Investigate incidents and near-misses and develop corrective action plans.
- Conduct an assessment of chemical exposure levels through various environmental monitoring methods.
- Maintain a log of completed and scheduled audits in SpheraCloud.
- Conduct daily walkthrough of labs to ensure compliance with HES policies.
Emergency Response:
- Help develop site-specific emergency response guidelines for the Lexington site, as needed.
- Coordinate emergency response activities, drills, and exercises to ensure preparedness and serve as a key member of the Braskem emergency response team.
- Lead strategic interventions to identify and mitigate risks related to compliance and/or work-related injuries/illnesses.
- Manage all on-site safety equipment and inventory (first aid, AEDs, chemical spill kits, chemical storage cabinets, etc.)
Required Skills, Education, and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in environmental science, chemistry, or biology.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or willingness to obtain certification
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations.
- Familiarity with environmental sustainability.
- Experience with HES management systems and risk assessment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
