About the Job

A hands-on technical leader to own the technical health and direction of Shopify storefront. You are responsible for setting standards our web developers build against, staying deep in the code, and partnering with PMs, designers, our engineering and data teams, and our external agency and partners (Shopify and Recharge) to keep the customer-facing experience fast, maintainable, and evolving with the platform.

Fosters leadership in others. Leads cross-functional projects. Champions company culture. Models at least three core values and is working on others. Develops high-potential employees. You'll spend meaningful time in the codebase, and meaningful time making the developers around you better.

Compensation: $140,000-160,000 base salary + annual bonus

Location: Hybrid (2 days a week in office) preferred, open to US-based remote candidates

What you'll do

  • Own the technical direction and architecture of the Shopify/Liquid theme and storefront: the patterns, conventions, and structural decisions the team builds within, and the roadmap for paying down what no longer serves us.
  • Act as Tech Lead for our internal web developers: review PRs, set and enforce coding guidelines, and give clear technical direction on how work should be approached before it starts.
  • Stay hands-on. Build features yourself, take on the hardest tickets, and prototype the approach when a pattern needs proving out. Roughly a player/coach split, with the coaching never crowding out the code.
  • Manage the technical relationship with third parties, including our design and development agency partners: scoping work, setting expectations on architecture and quality, reviewing what they deliver, and making sure their output fits cleanly into our codebase.
  • Stay current with the evolution of the Shopify platform and drive internal adoption of new capabilities: so ButcherBox leans on platform functionality rather than accumulating custom implementations we then must maintain.
  • Work with our internal engineering and data teams where the storefront meets the broader stack:  APIs and services, analytics and event tracking, authentication, and anything that crosses the boundary between Shopify and our own systems.
  • Partner with product management to help design, scope, and validate product direction: bringing technical feasibility, effort, and risk into the conversation early, and helping shape what we build rather than only how.
  • Act as a highly cross-functional player. Translate between the technical and the business, working closely with e-commerce, marketing, design, and data and analytics teams on launches, A/B tests, tracking and pixels, and promotions, etc.
  • Will work closely with backend engineering across all projects.

What you bring

  • 7+ years of web development experience, with substantial time in Shopify/Liquid.
  • Experience with Recharge or other large key Shopify partners
  • Demonstrated technical leadership on a team: you've owned architecture, set standards, reviewed others' code, and raised the level of the developers around you, even if the title never said "lead."
  • Strong HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript fundamentals, with a working command of the broader Shopify ecosystem: theme architecture, apps, metafields and metaobjects, Liquid edge cases, and where the platform's limits are.
  • A pragmatic, maintainable approach: you extend the theme and its conventions rather than over-engineering or rebuilding from scratch, and you can tell the difference between technical debt worth paying down and technical debt worth living with.
  • Experience working with and directing external agency partners, and comfort holding a quality bar with people who don't report to you.
  • Clear communication with non-engineers: you can explain a tradeoff to a PM or a designer in terms of what it costs and what it buys, and you're a credible partner in shaping product direction.
  • Collaborative and comfortable in an agile cadence, shipping through a PR review process in cross-functional squads.
  • Understanding of broader Shopify ecosystem like app proxies, applications, checkout extensions, webhooks and similar advanced features.

Nice to have

  • Subscription or DTC e-commerce experience, particularly with Recharge or a comparable subscription platform.
  • Depth in web performance and accessibility best practices: Core Web Vitals, WCAG, and the practical work of holding those standards in a theme that's actively changing.
  • Experience with A/B testing and experimentation tooling (e.g., Optimizely) and the technical patterns that keep experiments from degrading the codebase.
  • Strong understanding of data collection, analytics, and event tracking within an e-commerce site.
  • Experience with Shopify Plus capabilities: Functions, checkout extensibility, Hydrogen/headless: and a clear-eyed view of when they're worth adopting and when they aren't.

Benefits
  • Health: medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, an employer-funded HSA, and short & long-term disability benefits
  • Financial: 401(k) with generous employer match
  • Annual bonus based on company performance
  • Time off: unlimited paid time off policy, 20 weeks parental leave, an executive team that encourages a good work/life balance
  • Personal growth: Annual Learning & Development stipend, and access to a range of personal and professional coaching solutions through BetterUp
  • Food: a free Custom Classic ButcherBox each month and weekly lunch reimbursement
  • Other: reimbursement for wellness activities, an exceptional EAP, fertility benefits, life insurance and more
