Manager, Application Engineering
Carbon's Application Engineering team owns the collaboration with visionary product companies from concept to production readiness. Once design concepts have been identified to be a strong fit, Design Engineers help prospective customers successfully implement Carbon’s technology within their business. Our team drives and educates customers on Design for DLS best practices while creating products that meet or exceed customers requirements and objectives.
As a successful Manager for the Application Engineering team, you will lead a team who works with Carbon's Business Development team and external customers to support the identification and development of consumer products that will have a compelling benefit from implementing our technology. The role involves managing technical projects, ensuring quality standards are met, and collaborating with different departments to align the team’s goals with organizational objectives. You thrive in employing your creative problem-solving abilities and growing your depth of expertise across various functional areas (including design software, materials, manufacturing processes, and cross-functional team leadership). You are comfortable leading engagements with external and internal company stakeholders and can handle tough situations with poise and confidence.
This role is located in the Bay Area and requires you to be onsite approximately full time (M-F). You will be working closely with the team in both the office and in a lab setting with up to 20% of your time traveling to customer sites; primarily domestically.

- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of application engineers, including performance evaluations, coaching, and professional development.
- Allocate resources and define project priorities, ensuring the right skills are applied to each task.
- Develop a team who creates market-leading consumer products that utilize Carbon's technology to deliver customer benefit vs. standard manufacturing methods
- Learn and then educate your team and Carbon’s customers on Design for DLS best practices, including how the printer works, details of Carbon's materials, design guidelines to follow, software used to create new design concepts, and post processing techniques.
- Evaluate and prioritize potential projects for production based on product-market fit, including technical readiness and cost model evaluation
- Develop and optimize applications including customer benchmarks, prototype designs, and bridge/production applications
- Drive all stages of application development including design ideation, modeling, latticing, file preparation, material selection, manufacturing process optimization, and quality control to support customers end-to-end in their Carbon journey
- Provide technical leadership and hands-on support to the application engineering team, ensuring best practices and coding standards are followed.
- Assist in complex troubleshooting and resolution of issues in production or during development.
- Evaluate and implement new tools, technologies, and processes to improve team efficiency and performance.
- Participate in meetings with clients or internal teams to gather requirements, provide technical expertise, and manage expectations.
- Foster a collaborative, innovative, and results-driven team culture.
You have...
- 5+ years of experience in a managerial or leadership role, overseeing technical teams.
- Skilled with CAD and CAE software (SolidWorks, NX or CATIA; Magics, Rhino, Grasshopper)
- Strong leadership, mentorship, and team-building skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in client-facing design roles
- 5+ years of experience in application engineering with familiarity with traditional or additive manufacturing techniques and design for manufacturing strongly preferred
- Ability to be very detail-oriented with excellent verbal, graphical, and technical communication skills
- Demonstrated creative problem-solving abilities and positive attitude
- 3D printing experience
- BS or MS degree
- Ability to travel (Up to 20%, primarily domestic)

At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining salary. The Bay Area, CA compensation bracket for this position is a base and variable amount of $176,000 - $264,000 per year. In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $220,000, taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role.
