Staff Software Build Engineer

Role Summary:

We are seeking a Staff Software Build Engineer, to design, implement, and test the build system for the complete software stack for Cariad’s automotive infotainment platform software. The ideal candidate is a high achiever who thrives on exploring uncharted territories, challenging the status quo, and championing new ideas. As a member of CARIAD’s technical team, you will also interface with multiple stakeholders of VW Group’s technical team members.   

Role Responsibilities:

  • Build System and Infrastructure Development 
    • Define and implement state-of-the-art and efficient strategy for the build system and CI/CD pipelines 
    • Work with vendors, partners and other teams
    • Define and create verification pipeline for each code commit
    • Perform build failure analysis and resolve them
  • Software Build Development
    • Develop and maintain build scripts
    • Define and create automation to build locally, in Jenkins, in cloud 
    • Create and update build toolchains
    • Work with Development team to define branching strategy
    • Develop scripts to help resolve code commit errors and merge conflicts
  • Software Build Configuration Development
    • Create Docker for different build environment
    • Define and develop automation for manifest generation
    • Define and create build configuration scripts for different hardware and brands
  • Software Release pipeline Development 
    • Define and implement state-of-the-art and efficient strategy for software release pipeline 
    • Define build and release metrics, and create automation to publish the metrics
    • Work with vendors, partners and other teams 
  • Collaboration and Communication 
    • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including software, hardware, and quality assurance teams.  
    • Communicate project status, technical challenges, and solutions in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Test Automation Development
    • Define and implement state-of-the-art and efficient strategy for test automation 
    • Work with testing team to integrate test automation into buld workflow
  • Testing and Quality Assurance 
    • Developing and executing test plans to ensure software quality and reliability 
    • Conducting unit testing, integration testing and system testing. 
    • Addressing bugs and performance issues identified during testing. 
  • Documentation  
    • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation including design specification, build procedure, test reports, bug description, root cause and solution description, user guides, and release notes. 

General Skills:

  • Analytical and debugging skills. 
  • Effective written and oral communication skills. 
  • Experience in project and technical leadership. 
  • Ability to lead technical meetings and provide feedback. 
  • Collaborate and work with multiple teams across geographies and time zones.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Required Specialized Skills:

  • Experience or deep understanding on how Google AOSP, AAOSP build works. 
  • Experience or deep understanding on how Yocto Linux software build works. 
  • Experience with Google Cloud or equivalent 
  • Experience with Jenkins, Google Cloud Deployment Manager or equivalent 
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitLab, Gerrit, Gradle, OpenEmbedded, Buildroot, Artifactory
  • Experience with different ARM compilers
  • Experience creating pipeline for test automation in a Test-Driven Development (TDD) process 
  • Strong in scripting languages Python, shell, YAML, groovy

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with image signing and software package encryption 
  • Experience using Generative AI or Large Language Models (LLM) to improve software build efficiency and quality

Workplace Flexibility:

  • Calls, (virtual) meetings & workshops (overlapping with German/US business hours as needed) to align with leadership, development teams and partners. 
  • Occasional international and domestic travel to provide on-site support and planning/integration workshops with our internal and external stakeholders. 

Years of Relevant Experience:

  • 5+ years combined experience in build/release engineering, software configuration management
  • 5+ years’ experience with embedded Linux, Android
  • 5+ years’ combined scripting language experience in Python, Shell, Groovy 
  • 3+ years’ experience with Docker Container, Jenkins
  • 3+ years’ experience with Git, Repo, make, Cmake

Required Education:

  • BS in Computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering

Desired Education: 

  • MS in Computer/Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.

Compensation

Salary range is dependent on factors such as geographical differentials, credentials or certifications, industry-based experience, qualification and training. In the city of Mountain View, California, the salary range for this position is $157,000 - 219,667.
