Engineering Manager, LATAM (Starter Experience)

Change.org is looking for an Engineering Manager to evolve and elevate the experience for people who start a petition, a pivotal part of our social change platform. As a key member of our engineering team, you’ll be responsible for leading, developing, and mentoring a 5-person team, working closely with product and design partners to ensure our petition starters have the best experience possible and are set up for success. You will report directly to our VP of Engineering.

A bit about Change.org: we’re a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the world's largest social change platform, with 100 million monthly users, over 40,000 campaigns launched on the site every month, and a 100% user-generated, profitable revenue model. Our users win campaigns for change once every hour. In the last decade in Mexico, from the mobilization against the Maya train to the campaign to increase vacation days, many nationwide movements were created on Change.org. From the campaign Cáncer Warriors to ask for the release of the elephant Eli, dozens of local, national and international victories are happening every day thanks to the power of our users who are changing our country.

What you’ll do:

  • Strategic Leadership: Drive execution, strategic planning, and decision-making that sparks innovation and long-term success.
  • Team Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and career development for engineers at various levels.
  • Growth & Culture: Foster a growth mindset and an inclusive, high-performance, high-trust team environment.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Represent the engineering team in cross-functional discussions, working closely with Product and Design partners to align technical initiatives with business goals.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement changes to streamline workflows and boost productivity while keeping to best practices.

Core competencies:

Team Building & Management:

  • Develop, grow, retain, and when necessary, recruit and onboard top engineering talent.
  • Cultivate a high-performance, positive, inclusive team culture that values collaboration and creativity.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, facilitate continuous skill development.

Coding & Technical Expertise:

  • Full-stack development experience with a focus on scalability.
  • Solid proficiency in Ruby/Ruby on Rails, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, and GraphQL.
  • Robust understanding of SQL-based databases and data schema optimization.
  • Experience integrating Generative AI capabilities into products is a plus.
  • Some experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, and AWS.

Planning & Execution:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans aligned with business objectives.
  • Closely collaborate with product and design teams to set clear quarterly goals.
  • Break down projects into actionable plans and drive execution through MVPs and data-driven experimentation, building out once opportunities are validated.

Architecture, Design & Performance:

  • Champion architectural improvements to ensure high system quality and reliability.
  • Implement solutions that boost performance and reliability across systems.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Maintain proactive communication with stakeholders including executives, product managers, product designers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Represent engineering interests in strategic discussions while fostering a transparent and inclusive culture.

Target Experience:

  • Management: 2+ years as an engineering manager.
  • Engineering: 4+ years as a hands-on software engineer focused on web development.
  • Tech Stack: 3+ years in at least one of our core languages (Ruby, JavaScript, or Elixir) plus front-end expertise (React/JavaScript/TypeScript).
  • Infrastructure: Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS.
  • APIs: Experience developing RESTful APIs and GraphQL layers.
  • Language: Minimum English fluency at B2.

This is a remote role available in two different formats: 

  • Full-Time Employee: MX$129,000/month gross via a local third-party entity.
  • Contractor: MX$167,750/month gross.

Our compensation philosophy is based on pay equity. All of our salaries are determined before we launch a role – they are based on a predetermined salary scale, the level on that scale and the cost of labor for that location. 

Interview Steps:

  • Initial screen with a Recruiter
  • Interview with the Hiring Manager
  • Team interviews with some Engineering team members which will include: a live coding session, an architecture interview, and an interview with a Product team member
  • Executive interview with our CTO
