CHAOS Inc. is a global technology company delivering next-generation capabilities to the defense and critical industrial sectors. Founded in 2022 by a seasoned leadership team, CHAOS has quickly become the place where world-class multi-disciplinary engineers come to build mission-critical technologies. CHAOS has a mission-focused culture, dedicated to solving the toughest technical challenges. Its unique agile engineering approach enables rapid prototyping, while deep partnerships with defense and industry ensure real-world solutions.
Role Overview:
The Field Engineering Team is seeking a highly motivated and talented scientist or engineer to join our team in the research and development of cutting-edge RF (radio frequency) systems. With a deep understanding of our engineering, technology, and customers' missions, this individual will help develop and implement our products with customers. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the design, development, and deployment of innovative RF capabilities, with a focus on enhancing systems, sensors, and platforms for national security applications including UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) surveillance systems. Ability to solve complex technical problems and contribute to rapid prototyping efforts is expected
Responsibilities:
As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the candidate will engage in RF prototyping, from initial systems analysis and rapid system fabrication, through advanced signal processing while collaborating closely with experts in various technical domains. Successful prototyping activities will be fielded in a relevant operating environment and will demonstrate real-time, working systems. This role involves developing novel algorithms, performing data analysis, and building advanced hardware and system solutions.
The role will rely on experience fulfilling the following responsibilities :
- Architect and design advanced RF receiver and transmitter systems (e.g. pulsed and continuous wave (CW), low probability of intercept (LPI))
- Apply novel algorithms and signal processing techniques to improve system performance in emerging mission areas, including but not limited to digital beamforming, constant false alarm rate (CFAR), monopulse, clutter mitigation, and correlation analysis.
- Utilize lab-based RF measurement tools, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators, and AC/DC power supplies
- Understand and explain the differences between existing radar system capabilities for technical and non-technical audiences
- Travel up to 25% domestically and internationally in pursuit of above goals
- Collaborate with team members at company headquarters when not traveling
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Alternatively, an MS with 3-5 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
- Have possession of/qualification for an existing United States security clearance
- Experience with digital beamforming radar arrays, digital signal processing (DSP), RF wireless communications systems, and multi-channel RF systems and arrays (especially for passive RF or acoustic systems)
- Strong programming skills in scientific programming languages such as Python, Matlab, or similar.
- Experience with RF circuit prototyping, building mechanical structures (including antennas and arrays), and system performance evaluation.
- Familiarity with RF components such as filters, power dividers, oscillators, amplifiers, antennas, and software defined radios (SDRs).
- Experience with RF transmit/receive designs at high power levels (i.e. > 1kW).
- Hands-on experience with RF system integration and testing in laboratory and/or field environments (e.g. anechoic chamber and/or field).
- Experience writing code and drivers for embedded software processors under a real time signal processing paradigm.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

- More About Us: We're building the next generation of aerospace, defense and critical industry technologies with a seasoned team of mission-focused individuals. We were founded in June 2022 and our goal is to become the platform where world-class engineers come to solve critical, real-world problems. We use agile engineering approaches which enable rapid prototyping, deep partnerships with the defense industry ensuring real-world application, and our newly-invented Coherence platform (through which we’ve made a fundamental breakthrough) improves sensor performance and decision-making in real-time. As of September 2024 we have raised ~$240M with 8VC and Accel as leading investors. With a managing team that includes Epirus’ founding members (responsible for building a $1.5B company from scratch) + key drivers from Palantir (instrumental in Palantir’s growth to $1B in revenue), we are well-positioned to become one of the fastest growing companies to date!
The stated compensation range reflects only the targeted base compensation range and excludes additional earnings such as bonus, equity, and benefits. If your compensation requirements fall outside of the range, we still encourage you to apply. The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary offer may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations.
