About the Role

We’re building a secure, scalable web and mobile application for the United States Space Force (USSF), and content is central to its success. We’re seeking a Senior Content Strategist to lead the development and execution of content strategy across this platform. This role will shape how content is structured, governed, authored, and delivered to diverse user groups — from USSF personnel to broader Department of Defense audiences.

You’ll collaborate across teams—design, product, engineering, and communications—and guide a distributed group of content contributors to ensure that all content is effective, consistent, accessible, and aligned with mission needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Content Strategy: Develop and document the overarching content strategy for the USSF platform, including voice/tone, structure, and delivery standards.
  • Design Content Models: Work with developers and CMS admins to architect scalable, reusable content structures using Directus (headless CMS).
  • Governance & Standards: Establish editorial standards, style guides, and publishing workflows. Ensure consistency and compliance across distributed authors.
  • Contributor Enablement: Train, support, and onboard USSF personnel who contribute content. Create playbooks, templates, and onboarding materials to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Content Design & UX Writing: Collaborate with UX designers to write and review interface copy, microcopy, and task-based content for clarity, usability, and accessibility.
  • Audit & Optimize: Conduct content audits, user research, and stakeholder interviews to inform strategy. Use analytics to improve engagement and effectiveness.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the voice of content in product planning, sprint cycles, and stakeholder reviews. Advocate for user-centered messaging and plain language principles.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in content strategy, UX writing, or content design for digital platforms
  • Eligible to obtain DoD 8140-compliant Intermediate Certification
  • Strong background in working with CMS tools—preferably headless platforms like Directus, Contentful, or Strapi
  • Experience creating and maintaining editorial standards, content models, and governance frameworks
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a focus on clarity, tone, and accessibility
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional product teams in Agile environments
  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards and user-centered content practices
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8140-compliant Intermediate Certification: Security+ or BS in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Information Systems, or Computer Science, from an ABET accredited or CAE designated institution
  • Experience working with public affairs and legal teams within the DoD
  • Experience supporting federal or DoD digital services or working within a regulated or secure environment
  • Understanding of structured content design and content API delivery
  • Familiarity with plain language, information architecture, and UX principles
  • Exposure to security clearance processes or prior work with classified content workflows
  • Experience working in or with the USSF

Location & Work Environment

  • This is a hybrid role, with partial on-site work expected in Crystal City, VA, and flexibility for remote collaboration.
  • Occasional travel may be required for USSF stakeholder meetings or contributor workshops.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
