Staff Software Engineer - Clearing and Settlement

New York, NY

About Clear Street:

Clear Street is modernizing the brokerage ecosystem. Founded in 2018, Clear Street is a diversified financial services firm replacing the legacy infrastructure used across capital markets.

We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today’s complex, global market. Our platform is fully integrated with central clearing houses and exchanges to support billions in trading volume per day. We’ve agonized about our data model abstractions, created horizontal scalability, and crafted thoughtful APIs. All so we can provide a best-in-class experience for our clients.

By combining highly-skilled product and engineering talent with seasoned finance professionals, we’re building the essentials to compete in today’s fast-paced markets.

The Role:
As a  Staff Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in leading our engineering efforts to expand our core Platform for Clearing & Settlement. You are expected to lead the design and architecture of complex features and services, ensuring scalability and reliability across various financial transaction processes. You will solve complex, systemic issues that require an innovative approach and a deep understanding of system design and architecture. As a senior voice within the team, your role will extend beyond mentoring to actively shaping our engineering culture, refining technical standards, and promoting best practices in system design and software engineering.

The Team:
Our team consists of exceptionally skilled engineers dedicated to advancing financial technology. As a senior member, you will drive technological decisions, collaborate on strategic directions, and ensure that our platform not only meets but exceeds the expectations of our institutional clients. Your contributions will significantly influence our technology roadmap and the future of financial services technology.

Requirements:

  • Technical Expertise: 10+ years of professional experience in designing, implementing, and scaling high-performance services. While our stack includes Golang, experience in Java, C++, or similar languages, coupled with a willingness to master Go, is required.
  • Financial Domain Knowledge: Previous experience working in the financial services industry (esp. Back office, clearance and settlement systems) is a big plus.
  • Complex Systems: Demonstrated experience in architecting and contributing to systems that solve complex business challenges, with a particular focus on scalability, distributed systems, and handling vast data volumes.
  • System Design Acumen: Expert knowledge in system architecture and design, capable of leading system design discussions, making architectural decisions, and explaining trade-offs to both engineers and stakeholders.
  • Leadership and Influence: Proven ability to lead projects, mentor engineers, and drive technical and architectural decisions. You should have experience guiding teams through the full project lifecycle and delivering impactful technology solutions.
  • Technical Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to a variety of audiences, fostering collaboration and driving consensus among team members and stakeholders.
  • End User Focus: A strong emphasis on user experience, demonstrated through API design, service functionality, and performance optimization.
  • Technical Breadth: A solid grasp of design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and a broad understanding of various technology stacks and frameworks.
  • Preferred Experience: While not required, prior experience with our technology stack (Golang, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus. A commitment to mastering these technologies is expected.

We offer:

  • The opportunity to join a growing team of good people, where you can make a difference.
  • A new, high-quality code base with little technical debt and room to build new services and features.
  • An environment that embraces the utility of a DevOps oriented culture and combines it with a focus on CI/CD methodology.
  • A meritocratic philosophy that champions collaboration.
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, and perks.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
