Director, Software Engineering

Opportunity Overview:

This is a unique opportunity to lead world-class software engineering teams that power Cohere Health’s product innovation and delivery at scale. Our engineering teams operate with a high degree of autonomy, solving complex challenges across the business in close partnership with product and design. In this role, you’ll also oversee data engineering and core platform engineering functions, ensuring the technical foundation supports rapid growth and innovation.

As a member of the leadership team, you’ll work closely with business and AI partners across the globe to co-create solutions and drive the seamless execution of critical initiatives. You’ll foster a culture of innovation, champion Cohere’s values and leadership principles, and apply deep computer science expertise, including algorithms, data structures, and scalable system design to deliver products that transform healthcare.

What you’ll do:

  • Recruit and build high-caliber full-stack engineering teams
  • Promote a culture where teams feel stimulated by their work and passionate about their role
  • Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and manage engineering teams, including recruitment, mentorship, and performance evaluation
    • Nurture a collaborative and innovative culture within the engineering department
    • Develop and implement strategic plans for the engineering department in alignment with the company’s goals
    • Ownership and accountability of key engineering metrics of the platform, i.e. quality, availability, response time metrics, time to value, time to build, etc.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Contribute to the company’s overall strategy and business planning
    • Identify opportunities for technological advancements and innovation
    • Develop long-term plans for technology development and deployment
  • Product Development:
    • Work closely with product management to define product requirements and specifications
    • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of products and features
    • Recommend applicable technical patterns and solutions that are aligned with architectural guiding principles and standards through a regular cadence of delivery and continuous improvement
    • Ensure the scalability, security, and performance of products
  • Compliance and Security:
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and company policies
    • Implement and maintain robust security protocols to protect company data and intellectual property

Required Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience managing software engineering teams in a fast-paced, agile environment
  • 12-15 years experience in designing and operationalizing software products at scale
  • High proficiency of both written and verbal English communication
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality software on time and within budget
  • Proven success in growing and managing geographically distributed teams using successful recruiting, employee development, and retention
  • Prior experience in B2B enterprise SaaS startup
  • Experience with US Healthcare standards and regulations, e.g. FHIR/HL7, HIPAA
  • Experience with Payment Integrity (PI), Claims data processing and applied ML in healthcare or life sciences
  • Experience building and operating a compliant, secure data lake or lakehouse
  • Payer focused health-tech experience strongly preferred
  • Design and implement the PHI data access controls
  • Ability to partner with business to represent Technology during the client calls.
