Safety Specialist – Mechanical Construction
Wilkes Barre, PA | Full-time | Monday - Friday | Occasional Saturdays
Position Overview
We are seeking a Safety Specialist to support a large-scale healthcare construction project. This position will provide field-level safety oversight for mechanical construction activities, including commercial HVAC and duct installation, plumbing and pipefitting, medical gas systems, and mechanical infrastructure and utility installation.
The Safety Specialist will work closely with project management, field supervision, and craft employees to identify hazards, promote safe work practices, and maintain compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and project-specific safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily field safety inspections and identify hazards associated with mechanical construction activities.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926, company policies, and project safety requirements.
- Support safe execution of HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, medical gas, hot work, rigging, and utility installation activities.
- Review JHAs/JSAs, pre-task plans, permits, and other required safety documentation.
- Monitor high-risk activities, including fall protection, LOTO, confined spaces, excavation, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and material handling.
- Conduct safety orientations, toolbox talks, and employee coaching as needed.
- Participate in incident and near-miss investigations and track corrective actions.
- Maintain required safety inspections, training records, and project documentation.
- Partner with project management, supervision, and craft employees to resolve safety concerns.
- Exercise Stop Work Authority when serious or imminent hazards are identified.
Qualifications & Credentials
Required:
- Minimum 3 years of construction safety experience, preferably in commercial or industrial mechanical construction.
- Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Construction Standards.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Knowledge of mechanical construction hazards, including HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, hot work, material handling, and elevated work.
- Strong communication, documentation, and field safety skills.
- Ability to effectively work with craft employees, field supervision, project management, and client representatives.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic safety documentation systems.
Preferred:
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Management, or a related field.
- BCSP certification, such as CHST, STS-C, ASP, or CSP.
- Previous safety experience on healthcare, commercial, or large-scale mechanical construction projects.
- Familiarity with medical gas systems, hot work, LOTO, confined spaces, fall protection, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and rigging.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout an active construction site.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access elevated work areas.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and navigate uneven construction surfaces.
- Ability to access mechanical rooms, utility areas, rooftops, and other active work locations.
- Ability to wear required PPE for extended periods.
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor construction environments with exposure to noise, dust, temperature changes, and moving equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to approximately 30 pounds.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
