David Zwirner gallery seeks a motivated candidate for the position of Image Archive Intern, with prior experience or interest in learning about the operations of an imaging department within a commercial gallery. The Image Archive Intern will report to the Director of Digital Assets, in concert with the gallery’s Rights & Reproductions Associate, within the gallery’s Photography department. 

The intern will be responsible for assisting the Director of Digital Assets with the organization and cataloging of the gallery’s digital assets, primarily images and videos, by tasks like metadata entry, file organization, and quality control checks within the digital asset management system (DAMS). The intern will be responsible for assisting the Rights & Reproductions Associate with inbox management. This internship is ideal for anyone who wants to learn more about digital asset management, intellectual property, and image licensing. The intern will be in direct contact with gallery staff, publishers, museum professionals and other arts professionals, therefore discretion and poise are essential. 

What you’ll do: 

  • File organization: 

- Organizing files into appropriate folders based on project, category, or other relevant criteria. 

- File-naming consistent with gallery conventions. 

  • Metadata entry: 

- Adding detailed metadata to assets, including descriptions, keywords, copyright information, and usage rights. 

- Ensuring accuracy and consistency of metadata across all assets.

  • Quality control: 

- Checking for image quality issues like low resolution, incorrect file formats, or color inconsistencies. 

- Identifying and reporting any damaged or corrupted files. 

  • Project-based tasks: 

- Assisting with the migration of existing digital assets to the DAM system.

  • Rights Management: 

- Help conduct image research to determine rights-holders. 

- Assist with managing the rights@davidzwirner.com email account, making initial contact with incoming third-party licensing requests.

- Gather context for licensing requests, supporting the Rights & Reproductions Associate with the full life cycle of publication requests (i.e. exhibition catalogues, artist monographs, art historical surveys, and other third-party publication requests as received). 

  • Administrative duties: 

- Assist with the distribution of inbound publications received by the Rights team, coordinate the delivery of publications. 

- General support to team, ad-hoc image archive projects as needed. 

 

What we would like you to have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Work experience or an education in photography/imaging is preferred.
  • Technical skills: 

- Basic understanding of file formats, image editing software (i.e. Photoshop), and digital asset management systems. 

- Understanding the importance of accurate and consistent metadata for asset retrieval. 

- Proficiency with data recording software (i.e. Sheets, Excel). 

  • Organization and attention to detail: 

- Ability to maintain a structured system for storing and managing digital assets with accuracy. 

- Keen attention to metadata/file-naming. 

- Understanding the importance and nuances of color management.

  • Communication skills: 

- Ability to collaborate with different teams and clearly communicate asset needs. 

 

The Summer internship runs from June through August. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm.  All interns are paid NYC minimum wage of $16.50/hour. All candidates must be residents of NY, NJ, or CT. Only qualified candidates will be contacted. Absolutely no calls or walk-ins please.
