The role

As a Technical Program Manager for Gemini Advanced Capabilities, you will be responsible for leading and driving complex and often ambiguous technical programs related to the development and improvement of core features and functionalities within the Gemini models. While your initial focus may be on areas such as long context, your scope could evolve to encompass other critical Gemini capabilities. You will work closely with research scientists, engineers, and other stakeholders to define program strategies, set goals and priorities, and perform technical due diligence to scope engineering efforts. This role requires a comprehensive technical understanding of machine learning and AI principles. You will be instrumental in building effective cross-functional teams, managing risks and interdependencies, and implementing continuous improvements to ensure successful delivery.

Key responsibilities

  • Technical Planning & Execution: Perform technical due diligence to evaluate engineering scope, establish milestones, define timeframes, and determine engineering resource needs for various Gemini features. Drive the execution of these plans.
  • Cross-Functional Team Building: Build and guide effective cross-functional program teams by fostering alignment on goals and direction, and ensuring efficient ways of working.
  • Risk & Dependency Management: Anticipate and manage risks, deliverables, and interdependencies with other related programs, teams, and functions across the Gemini ecosystem.
  • Process Improvement & Optimization: Proactively identify, own, and implement continuous improvement opportunities. Co-develop and optimize governance, decision-making structures, and information flow. This includes identifying and implementing automation or tooling to improve engineering velocity.
  • Stakeholder Management & Communication: Provide clear guidance and direction during times of uncertainty. Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, ensuring alignment and managing expectations.
  • Technical Analysis & Tools: Develop or facilitate the development of technical analysis, tools, and processes across teams that support engineering execution, excellence, and velocity for advanced AI model development.
  • Documentation & Best Practices: Ensure comprehensive documentation of program plans, technical specifications, and processes. Promote and apply program management best practices.
  • Team Support: Provide proactive support to the team, identify and solve operational issues, and act as a mentor and SME where appropriate.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Technical Program Manager at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to scope and shape ambiguous programs, define strategies, and set clear goals and priorities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of program management, tools, methodologies, and processes.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of machine learning and AI principles. Must possess a strong technical aptitude with the ability to understand complex systems, contribute to technical discussions, and identify opportunities for technical improvements like automation to support the team and increase engineering velocity.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills. Ability to guide alignment and provide clear direction.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and research-driven environment, navigating change effectively.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and shared objectives.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • A strong understanding of large-scale models and challenges related to model capabilities.
  • Experience working on projects directly related to core capabilities of large language models (e.g., long context, reasoning, multimodality).
  • Experience performing technical due diligence and scoping engineering efforts.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) or developing automation tools.
  • Familiarity with computing platforms.
  • Experience developing tools or processes to improve engineering velocity.
  • Experience with different project management approaches and a demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving project requirements.
  •

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
