The Google DeepMind Legal team is looking for an adept and enthusiastic Product Counsel to partner with our product and research teams to advise on legal matters relevant to developing and releasing AI models, products, and systems. You’ll also work with cross-functional teams to ensure we’re prepared for forthcoming regulatory changes that might impact our technology. Finally, you’ll collaborate closely with Google DeepMind compliance teams, other members of the legal team, Google Regulatory Affairs, and with outside counsel when needed.

The role

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate with and advise multiple cross functional groups within Google DeepMind, including Security, Privacy, Responsibility, Product Management, and Compliance teams.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including Google Regulatory Affairs and Compliance teams, to establish and refine external advocacy positions for existing and forthcoming regulatory regimes for AI technology, and advise on the implications of those positions for Google DeepMind research and products.
  • Establish governance frameworks for Google DeepMind models, data, and other assets that shape AI development that include best practices in areas such as data governance, security, privacy, and AI safety and responsibility. 
  • Advise technical teams and senior management on how to translate new and existing governance frameworks into actionable, technical requirements and implement them across systems.
  • Advise senior management on risks associated with AI research direction and existing governance frameworks; and present options to mitigate or eliminate those risks.
  • Identify and advise on legal considerations around Google DeepMind’s data governance and data lifecycle (e.g., ingestion, use, sharing, and deletion of data) which may include IP, licensing, privacy, policy, and other legal considerations.

About you

To set you up for success as a Product Counsel at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • You’re a business advisor and go-getter.
  • You’re a qualified solicitor in England and Wales or you have a JD from a United States accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California and New York preferred)
  • You’re proactive, have exceptional communication skills, and know how to balance business demands (including legal, policy, technical, compliance, and cultural demands) to produce practical, solution-focused recommendations. 
  • You’re familiar and have advised on key legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to AI products and systems, as well as general privacy and consumer protection regulations ( e.g., GDPR, EU AI Act, Digital Markets Act)
  • You’re experienced in partnering with executives and senior stakeholders on sophisticated legal matters that have strategic significance, and instill trust in everyone you interact with. 
  • You’re organized, accustomed to working at a fast pace, and juggling many different business initiatives; and you can quickly pivot with changing business priorities.

In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • You have prior experience as in-house legal counsel at a technology company.
  • You have a track record of contributions to AI products or systems, and have a balanced view of the opportunities and risks of those AI products or systems.
  • You’re a team player who enjoys being part of a highly supportive and collaborative team.
  • You’re excited about Google DeepMind’s mission and want to help achieve it.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $266,000 - $374,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
