Research Engineer, AI for Education
Snapshot
Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
About Us
We are seeking a Research Engineer to join the AI for Education team in London. This is a high-impact role with direct influence on how we design, measure, and improve the pedagogical capabilities of our large AI models. You will join a team working to build the next generation of evaluation platforms and methodologies, exploring model capabilities and advancing the infrastructure used by researchers and engineers working on AI for learning.
At Google DeepMind, we've built a unique culture and work environment where long-term ambitious research can flourish alongside product development that reaches teachers and learners around the world. Our interdisciplinary team has deep expertise in modern AI models, evaluation with human subjects, product development, and learning science. See our work on LearnLM and our recent release of Guided Learning.
The Role
Research Engineers at Google DeepMind are the bridge between ambitious research ideas and functional, large-scale systems. They work in close collaboration with Research Scientists to design and build the infrastructure, models, and tools necessary to drive groundbreaking research.
For the AI for Education team, this means building robust, scalable evaluation pipelines, designing and implementing novel measurement techniques, and developing the frameworks that allow us to rigorously test and understand the pedagogical capabilities of our models. As a Research Engineer, you will be instrumental to transforming research hypotheses into tangible experiments. Your contributions will enable the team to make rapid, empirically-driven progress towards AI systems that can safely and effectively support learners everywhere. You will work with the rest of the team on our ethical, participatory approach to evaluation. In particular, you will actively collaborate with student and teacher communities to ensure we ground our research in their needs, goals, and values.
Key responsibilities:
- Design, build, and own end-to-end infrastructure for evaluating the pedagogical capabilities of large AI models.
- Leverage generative AI models to automate the creation of evaluation materials.
- Implement and execute a variety of evaluation methodologies, including large-scale experiments with human participants.
- Develop and validate novel metrics and automated systems for assessing key model capabilities and their impact on learners.
- Conduct rigorous statistical analysis of experimental data.
- Collaborate closely with research scientists, learning science experts, and product teams to translate research questions into robust, measurable experiments.
About You
In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- MSc in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Exceptional software engineering skills in Python, with a track record of building high-quality systems and infrastructure for evaluation or scientific research.
- Proven experience building and maintaining complex data-processing or evaluation pipelines at scale.
- Strong background in experimental design, statistical analysis, and data science methodologies.
- A track record of impactful work, demonstrated through publications, open-source contributions, or shipped products and systems.
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Experience with full-stack development and building user-facing research platforms or tools.
- Experience with human-in-the-loop data collection and crowdsourcing platforms.
- Familiarity with prompting large AI models for structured data generation and building analysis pipelines that leverage their capabilities.
- An interest in mixed-methods research, including experience with or an appreciation for qualitative data analysis (e.g., analyzing user feedback, interviews, or open-ended survey responses).
- A passion for building technology in a responsible and community-focused manner, with an interest in participatory research methods that empower members of affected communities.
- Demonstrated passion or experience in education technology or learning science.
At Google DeepMind, we value diversity of experience, knowledge, backgrounds and perspectives and harness these qualities to create extraordinary impact. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law.
